I’m so sad to see so many people I used to admire sneering at & deriding me & people I care about relaying their first-hand experience of racist abuse aimed at them. One day the history books will asked how whatever happens next happened - these people fertilised the ground.
I’m exhausted & genuinely becoming very depressed. It’s getting harder to get out of bed in the morning knowing the toxic culture building against me & my community & the ridicule we face for speaking up against racism. The constant demands for evidence which is never sufficient.
These last three years, antisemitism hasn’t just snowballed, it hasn’t just become acceptable, it’s become a trend. It’s now uncool to stand up for Jews - it marks you out as a secret centrist or Tory or Zionist or whatever else - rather than simply an anti-racist.
It kills me to know that there are people out there who imagine that I, & my dear friends who are going through hell, are colluding to invent all of this because we’re in on some secret conspiracy. It hurts me that I liked these people who shun us. I feel dehumanised & rejected.
People imagine this is some big political game where we’re all rubbing our hands with glee while we conspire. When we meet up to commiserate, it’s with exasperated shrugs & tears in our eyes. We’re fucking terrified. Jews in this country are terrified. And still they laugh at us.
The idea that this is for personal gain! Sure. I love having all my time wasted by something that shouldn’t be happening. I love barely being present with my nephew because I’m so anxious about what’s being said about me online. I love losing sleep. I love the constant sobbing.
I love being unfollowed & shunned by people I thought were friendly colleagues, or even friends, because they think I’m out to unfairly smear their hero & murder Palestinian babies. I love being added to lists on twitter marked “pedophiles”. I love being shouted at all day.
It really benefits my career as a comedy writer to be known first & foremost as “that girl who talks about antisemitism”. It’s really good for business to have that be the thing people think of before they remember I have an actual job. This personal gain thing is brilliant.
I wonder if it occurs to these people that I have so many positive ideas & ideals to contribute which barely get the time of day because I’m too busy firefighting the constant onslaught. When I do share a more positive vision for politics, my motives & sincerity are questioned.
