Bernie Sanders running in 2020 is the surest sign that no one learned anything from 2016.
Bernie was blown the fuck out. Let’s start there. He lost by almost 4 million votes, and lost Democratic strongholds like California and New York by wide margins, racking up most of his votes from the more *conservative* parts of the state.
He continually played up victories in sure GE losers like Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma while implying that Hillary’s victories in the South were the product of the Confederacy. (Whiteness and Bernie’s victories track extremely well together.)
Bernie breached his opponent’s data and when caught breaking the rules, *victim-blamed his opponent* before whining about facing consequences and bullied them into letting him back into the data system and offering *him* an apology.
Bernie knew that Russia was interfering with the election against Hillary, even as far back as May, and instead of dropping out of his dead-man-walking campaign to coalesce support behind her, HE TOOK IT TO THE CONVENTION and allowed Wikileaks to pursue a “rigged” narrative.
I still argue with people about whether the 2016 primary was rigged despite the fact that Bernie spent most of his campaign after NY arguing that superdelegates should ignore the popular vote and give him the nomination by fiat.
Bernie only succeeded because of a bullshit caucus system that rewards the most activist voters over the widest array of voices. It also privileges able-bodied, white voters with disposable income who can take hours off to vote. No surprise he won WA’s caucus and not the primary.
Over and over again, Bernie publicly trashed the Democratic Party as an agent of popular sovereignty, implicitly trashing Democratic voters and directly trashing his colleagues. In return, he took millions in resources and shared none of his own.
When supporters effected violence and harassment campaigns against Democrats, Bernie waited to condemn them or softened his criticism by blaming “both sides.” He also repeatedly elides the racism of Trump voters and continues to suggest we reach out to them.
His answer on the centerpiece of his campaign - using the force of government to address income inequality by breaking up banks - showed that he had never given actual thought to the legality of his own policy or even whether that was within his powers as president.
Bernie has never released his tax returns - initially saying that he needed to organize his paperwork, then blaming it on his wife and finally releasing a summary. Then he used information from Hillary’s tax returns to paint her as a tool of moneyed interests.
Bernie said that he would only run an issues based campaign but allowed surrogates to call Hillary a whore, attack her voters, and insist that she was UNQUALIFIED to be President of the United States.
I am not reliving the 2016 primary as much as calling out this pattern of behavior that has infected our politics and created a cult of permission around the shitty racist and sexist politics of Bernie Sanders.
Bernie Sanders cares about the poor; but refuses to acknowledge that race and gender are keeping some people poorer than others.
Bernie Sanders is a feminist; but traffics in misogynistic rhetoric, allows misogyny from supporters and surrogates and repeatedly negotiates away human rights for women if he can get a crumb back for economics.
Bernie Sanders is not a racist; but he insists upon speaking down to black and Latino voters as if we are not equals, minimizes the violent racism of Trump supporters and ignores that class in this country has always been deeply tied to race.
Bernie has always been flawlessly consistent, we are told, except for his rape essays, or his support for Sandinistas, or his speaking well of Castro, or his vote for the Crime Bill, or his vote for shadow banking, or his work dumping waste in Sierra Blanca, or...
Or we could not do this to ourselves again. Because nothing Bernie has done since his first run has remedied his problems. Instead he’s just added more to the receipts. And he’s not going to change. He will never be president because lord help us if he were.
Anyway, just know that when the vetting destroys him this time that there’s no Hillary Clinton to absolve you of how you act towards other Democrats. You can’t rationalize that we deserve it because no one could be better than Bernie. He’s exposed and so are all of you.
