Supporting Jussie Smollett & Tawana Brawley Wasn’t Wrong. Discrediting Black Victims Is. ow.ly/cyP030nNyge
*^^^ "The conservative agenda is clear when pundits use Brawley - and now Smollett - to discredit and cast doubt upon people of color when they claim to be victims of racial violence."
*^^^ "They want you to ignore the hate crime statistics, the footage of Trump rallies, and the brutality of the Trump-supporting alt-right in Charlottesville."
*^ "In a study published in The Color of Crime, Katheryn Russell-Brown found that white people falsely claimed Black people had victimized them in 70 percent of racial hoaxes carried out from 1987-1996. The right-wing media never raises these cases when discussing racial hoaxes."
I would really like to check out her 2nd Edition, updated since the 1st was published in 1998:
The Color of Crime | Racial Hoaxes, White Fear, Black Protectionism, Police Harassment, and Other Macroaggressions | NYU Press ow.ly/KWSD30nNyK2 #SoJustBooks
We've already seen a flurry of articles and posts about how racialized hoaxes are so bad for victims of hate crime - what rarely gets discussed in historical context is that it's because groups in power use these examples in ways marginalized groups cannot.
White power groups KNOW the power of a publicized hate crime since Emmett Till brutalized body made the cover of Jet Magazine - there has been a steady onslaught of campaigns to discredit these images and what they represent since then #SoJustHistory
When white or straight people claim a black or gay person victimized them, and it turns out to be a lie, straight whites often claim it was a fluke - when black/queer people do it, it's widely publicized as a claim that hate crimes against these communities aren't real

If Jussie Smollett is a hoaxster, what do we call Donald Trump? ow.ly/f5of30nNzTZ
*^ "Both hoaxes play off racialized and sexualized fears of violence. Smollett seems to have been banking on the all too real danger of assault that queer people of color face, especially in an age when hate crimes are on the rise."
*^ "Trump, in perpetuating his invasion hoax, frequently tells lurid, false stories of Mexican men grabbing women and taping them up, wrapping tape around their mouths in order to sell them to rapists ... to justify hatred of those perceived by white people as "other."
Racism, sexism, and homophobia are entirely built on hoaxes - the lies and frauds of inferiority and criminality myths; lynching was based on these lies and hoaxes, yet these stories are often hushed, minimized or erased entirely.
White supremacy is a hoax.
Male superiority is a hoax.
Heteronormativity is a hoax.
The American dream is a hoax.
Our last presidential election was a hoax!
By constantly distracting Americans from real threats to our security and attempts at democracy, Trump and his followers continue to funnel media time, money, and energy from the dismantling of wide-scale hoaxes like so-called threats from Mexicans and Muslims.
Since the Bible seems to be a source they don't claim is fake news, let me conclude with this:
Matthew 7:3-4
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?"
Matthew 7:5
“You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye."
