Thread: the Trump @StateDept tampered with key evidence for women's #asylum cases, and undermined the impartiality of our human rights reporting system. Fellow immigration attorney Joanna Gaughan caught them red handed:
/ Every year @StateDept releases a report on each country's human rights practices. @TheJusticeDept immigration judges and @DHSgov asylum officers use these reports as evidence for asylum cases & emphasize them over other sources bc DoS is considered impartial and reliable.
/ The photo? Honduras report, domestic violence. L is 2016, R is 2017 (latest available). Yellow describes the nice laws to protect women. Pink was eliminated in 2017, explains that the laws aren't actually enforced, and that rape and dv remain serious problems in Honduras.
/ Honduras didn't magically start protecting women in 2017, so what changed? You can guess. @amnesty reports that @StateDept "received a directive to remove passages on women’s reproductive rights & discrimination from its annual report."amnestyusa.org/press-releases…
/ I have an asylum trial in a few weeks for a Honduran woman who survived a lifetime of gender-based violence. Police refused to help. ICE attorneys will probably cite the 2017 report, argue that she doesn't need asylum, bc the govt of Honduras can protect her. How convenient.
/ This isn't news -- 2017 came out last spring and we may actually see the 2018 reports soon. Watch for more censorship, denial, and misogyny.
/On top of the clear attempt to undermine women's asylum claims, it's possible DoS was asked to help the administration's claim that Central Americans no longer need Temporary Protected Status #TPS. immigrationimpact.com/2018/08/27/gov…
