This #BIWisdom Friday I'd like to explore concepts of a #DataCulture. What do *you* think it is? How is it sustained by #Success and #Value? Does support from #BILeadership with a #CDO help? How important are the #Data #skills (maybe especially Literacy)? Join is at 1PM EST
Just a few minutes until this week's #BIWisdom. Join us to discuss #Data #culture . What might it be, how do you use it, how can you value it, or know if it is working.
Happy #BIWisdom to us all. I hope everyone had a fine week.
Last week the #BIWisdom tribe was keen to know that I had diverse sources of caffeine. I’m happy to share an early example
Which reminds us that the @RealBIEvent is a fine place to learn, discuss, think, and be inspired. It’s #BIWisdom in the physical world. Well, MIT anyway. (Love it).
So, we in this #BIWisdom tribe have a fairly good, generous, and pluralistic sense of what #data is. But what about this #Culture piece...
I've been studying #culture for ages in different ways (it turns out), one might say for the *first* 15-20 years of my professional life. The #BIWisdom turn was the embrace of #BusinessIntelligence - a fine thing.
Briefly I want to ask you the #BIWisdom tribe what you think a #Data #Culture is. I started with the @Wikipedia articles: Wikipedia defines #culture as “the social behavior and norms found in human societies”
one of the "norms" is #tool use. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tool . I think a #BIWisdom data culture is an organization (society) which has widespread use of #data and #Analytics as tools for their work.
...and then one must confront the health of the #BIWisdom data culture: what are the constituent parts? How healthy or mature are they? Are we banging #data rocks together, or something better? How widespread/democratic is the use?
As @dennishafley points out, adding #data as an integral precursor to making decisions is a key step. This might remind us of the #learning aspect of a #culture . Bring awesome data perspective to the data-illiterate might be a #BIWisdom #CultureShock
I'm thinking there may well be "level thresholds" of health in a #BIWisdom #DataCulture - partly refinement in practices, partly broadening access and #literacy
Maybe a #Data #CultureShock is where data and #Analytics are being used for asymmetrical competition and disruption of a society/community/market. #BIWisdom
Now I should note that our #BIWisdom hour is up, and I do want to respect the tribe's time so they can devote themselves to other #data that warrants attention. By all means reply, retweet at your leisure, however and whenever you find us. More on #DataCulture soon...
Special thanks this week to the treasured @dennishafley and @MElizabethJE . Fond regards to "absent friends" who encourage this #BIWisdom thinking:
I keep @SaraWarnerBI in mind on the concept of "the less-tangible-value work is a precursor to more tangible #value ". A #BIWisdom #DataSupplyChain of value-adding.
I should say @tpowlas is an inspiration for the #Community concepts of a #BIWisdom #DataCulture, especially if we can foster, encourage, and support (self) assessment tools.
I remember the #BIWisdom practicality of @PhantorGorth perspective of "making it work" in the real world.
...not ever to forget the work of @philhusbands (and *many* more - you know who you are) in defining, detecting, measuring, and driving #value with #BIWisdom in #BusinessIntelligence
To close: it is a sign of a VERY healthy #data and #Analytics market that we see so much innovation, value, investment, and #BIWisdom self-awareness in even *thinking* about a #DataCulture ...and in that I'm delighted to play my part.
