For the last few months I have been speaking to former employees of one of the darlings of the UK's fintech sector @RevolutApp about what it was like to work there. The picture they painted was grim. This is the story wired.co.uk/article/revolu…
It all started off with these revelations by @lalalalia in @eldiarioes. That a Spanish applicant had been asked to work for free recruiting clients in order to have a chance at getting a job at the company.
At the time @RevolutApp head of comms and PR @ChadWestTweets said the company had shut down the practice once it came to his attention. But as I reveal in the article, the test had already been used on applicants for a Greek PR and community manager role months earlier.
Here is an email that was sent to an applicant for the Greek PR and Community manager role in May 2018, asking them to recruit 100 customers to pass to the interview phase.
As a source said to me: “The thinking was this might not get us the best candidate, but at least we will get a lot of free sign-ups.”
Then I started talking to people that came face to face with the culture of bullying, unfair dismissals and impossible targets. Many former employees talk of the way they were bullied and eventually fired by VP for operations @alanchanguk
But a lot of the problems with the culture start at the top. Last spring CEO Nikolay Storonsky sent out this message on the company Slack chat, saying staff “with performance rating [sic] 'significantly below expectations' will be fired without any negotiation after the review”.
As an employment lawyer pointed out to me, this practice could be unlawful.
I sent detailed q's to the company asking about the allegations. They didn't deny nor properly address them. Instead, they said their culture was "evolving".

For the people I spoke to, many of whom still suffer the consequences of their time there, that's just not good enough.
If anyone wants to talk to me about the company, confidentially, my DMs are open.
.@Revolutapp has been trying to push back against this week's avalanche of revelations. While they have lines prepared on the CFO's resignation & the money laundering scandal, they have nothing to say about my article.

Their silence speaks volumes.
