The weirdest part about the fantasies some people have about light skinned Black people passing into whiteness is that passing is a whole psychological experience that as far as we know from written records was not good. You cannot convert to whiteness, even when you’re passing.
White people are not walking down the street worrying that someone will find out they are actually of African heritage

Like, lol
I know it’s really hard to acknowledge that Blackness is more than melanin counts
I wish people would take time to think through the way their attempts to confine Blackness to certain definitions is a reflection of their sense of confinement but also their willingness to accept that confinement as a synonym for Blackness
Also I wince every time people refer to phenotype because like ... have you ever noticed that a lot of East Asians have noses that we believe are phenotypically Black and a lot of Black people have eyelids similar to East Asian phenotype stereotypes?
The proclivity to try and categorize people based on facial features in this way is actually from deep in the heart of white supremacist race science
Like that’s literally where all of this language comes from: race/racist science. It’s related to comments about head shape and intelligence and how those things are supposedly tied to race.
So you should always be asking yourself: “to what extent are my language choices reinforcing white supremacist classification systems? Do these choices serve Black futures?”
