Well, looks like the snake oil salesman has come back for more. Since he's attacked my credentials and proclaimed victory, I guess I will go ahead and respond, though it's kind of like wrestling a pig: you both get dirty and the pig likes it. So, let's talk about this.
Dinesh claims that because I refer to the same sources that he does, that I am somehow agreeing with him. This is (obviously) not the case. But let's start with the first problem: DD doesn't really CITE anything in this article. Citations involve detailed references.
So, for example, below: Hitler said this...but when? Where? What is his source? What is the context? Referring to a primary source is NOT a citation of the source. (I get this is a "journalistic" piece, but if we are going to dissect sources, this is how we do it.)
What's more important are the assertions he makes without any citation (see below). It'd be great to know who says Mussolini was a Marxist (let alone a socialist. (I've discussed his politics in my thread.) This is just a DD opinion at this point, without evidence.
My undergraduate students are pretty good at citations. Maybe this handout from the "2nd rate" @unc where I worked in the @UNCWRITINGCTR as a grad student might help. writingcenter.unc.edu/tips-and-tools/
In any case, since he has commented throughout my thread, I'll address some other issues now. DD asserts that because he has published 17 books to my 2, he is somehow more credible. Let's explore this a bit.
At most universities (even the 1st rate ones), 3-4 books is usually the reqmt for associate or even full professor (which DD isn't.) Why? B/c academia expects scholarly rigorous work, peer-reviewed, published by scholarly presses, and making a contribution to our knowledge.
So, if we look at the book that he is peddling in the article "The Big Lie, etc, etc," it was published by Regnery Publishing, a partisan, vanity press that is probably giggling its way to the bank or actually thinks he knows what he is talking about.
Note: scholarly presses DO publish the work of conservatives...like my colleague, Philip Zelikow (who worked in the GW Bush WH and edited the 9/11 report). @Harvard_Press has published two of his books. Almost all of DD's books come from presses you have to google.
So back to that 17 number. Just because someone has printed your words in book form does not mean you have written a scholarly, rigorous piece of prose. Put another way: I've played lots of soccer games, but none were in the Premier League. (even though I'm pretty good 😉)
(My work has also been well-received in academia, not panned by basically...well..all of it.)
Finally, for the moment, DD once again is fixated on the Democrats (pointing out that FDR was a progressive Democrat.) Well...duh. Maybe @KevinMKruse and my American history friends can point to the massive protests by the GOP to our racist internment of Japanese-Americans?
So...again...I'm not really sure what his point is...but I'm fairly confident it's not what he thinks it is. Bless your heart, Dinesh!
And for the reading audience, I have chosen the following as the official soundtrack for this thread. I'll be here for the next flailing about by Dinesh. (Put down the shovel, man.)
