The “Libya model” denuclearization — floated by John Bolton, and then by Mike Pence — drew two threats of withdrawal from talks by North Korea last year. A decade after Libya denuclearized, it was invaded by US and European allies (under Obama/Clinton) and Qaddafi was overthrown.
2. North Korea has been under sanctions since the 1950s. United Nations and aid groups were only able to help one third of six million people estimated to be in need in North Korea last year due to a lack of funding.…
3. Worth recalling that Putin sees the invasion of Libya and overthrow and subsequent killing of Qaddafi (a Russia ally) as the turning point in US-Russia relations (also possibly when he decided he couldn’t work with Clinton on the reset)…
4. In a now notorious reaction to news of Gaddafi's death, Clinton joked to a reporter, "We came, we saw, he died!" Russian journalist Mikhail Zygar has written that Putin saw the takedown of Qaddafi, who had negotiated with the West, as a lesson for Russia.
5. "When he was a pariah, no one touched him," Zygar wrote of Putin’s reaction to Qaddafi’s overthrow. "But as soon as he opened up he was not only overthrown but killed in the street like a mangy old cur."
6. US+European allies began a military action against Libya in 2011 to prevent Qaddafi’s threatened massacre of civilians. Clinton pressured Obama to join the European-led action. But no one asked what signal toppling Qaddafi might send to countries US was persuading to disarm.
7. The Libya intervention allowed anti-government rebels to put Qaddafi on the run, and later they pulled him from a ditch and killed him. Libya then devolved into a dysfunctional state. And Kim Jong Un has taken notice. He doesn’t want the “Libyan model” of denuclearization.
8. The actual Libyan denuclearization took place in 2003 after US toppled Saddam, when after a lengthy, secret set of negotiations with UK and the US, Qaddafi agreed to voluntarily hand over the equipment he had purchased from A.Q. Khan, a leader of the Pakistani nuclear program.
