Postscript: I will be writing about this in my book #DisorderedCosmos :-)
The moral of the story is: folks in Black studies should be using analyses by *Black scientists* as a starting point for their physics analogies, rather than relying solely/primarily on what white scientists say. Ignoring the existence of Black scientists is a form of erasure.
Black scientists exist in 2019 and are not just the stuff of the AfroFuturist imagination. We exist now. And we have existed for a long time. Scientific thought is not new to Black people. White people did not introduce science to Black people.
An insidious inference of the discourse of “diversity and inclusion” is the suggestion that Black people are being newly included in scientific thinking, rather than recognizing that we are being newly included in institutional recognition as scientific thinkers. It’s different.
It’s disheartening when non-STEM Black academics fail to recognize that Black scientists are real and not just some figment of their imagination
For folks interested in Black intellectual history in astronomy, I encourage you to read @astroholbrook’s work and see her documentaries
