I wrote about the dangers of #BarcodeVoting a year ago & many times since. Altho I’m thrilled @ericgeller & @VerifiedVoting have finally sounded the alarm, we should all ask what took so long & why is the TV media still silent?! @stevebenen 1/
/ By waiting so long to sound the alarm, the national media & @VerifiedVoting have allowed the vendor propaganda—that INSECURE machine-marked barcoded printouts are “secure”—to settle in. Overcoming this propaganda will require significant repetition.
/ I say this based on SCIENCE. No one can expect that a few articles and letters will suffice now to undue the significant damage wrought by allowing vendors to misleadingly promote crappy barcoded printouts as “paper ballots” again and again and again.
/ .@VerifiedVoting and the national media must sound the alarm at least as many times as they have allowed the vendors and their surrogates to mislead. I hope they understand this. I hope they are up to the task. #ProtectOurVotes #HandMarkedPaperBallots
/ And by the way, while the national media, @VerifiedVoting and the experts who testified to Congress waited to get their acts together, many jurisdictions bought these dangerous barcode voting systems, including counties in TX, AR, KY, LA, TN, NJ, DE (whole state), & KS.
/ While they waited to get their acts together, @amyklobuchar, who consulting with @VerifiedVoting, introduced an election security bill that would allow machine-marked barcoded printouts as a primary system!
/ While they waited to get their acts together, @PhillyVotes voted to buy ES&S’s ExpressVote XL barcode system as a primary system! Philly is the largest county in a swing state!
/ And what kills me is that the problems with the machine-marked printouts are and always were OBVIOUS! You don’t even have to be a “cybersecurity expert” to understand them!
/ There were already studies on “Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails” which showed that most voters don’t look at them and that they are essentially useless. Why did so many scientists ASSUME without conducting any sort of studies that the new barcoded printouts wld be better?!
/ It is also obvious that relying on touchscreens to mark ballots is a glaring security risk. What happens if the weather causes power outages or the power grid is attacked?! This is OBVIOUS stuff! wired.com/story/russian-…
/ It is also OBVIOUS that touchscreens enable corrupt election officials to manufacture long lines by limiting the number of working machines that are sent to certain precincts! OBVIOUS! thehill.com/homenews/campa…
/ And of course it is OBVIOUS that voters can’t read barcodes!! The barcode is the only part of the printout counted as ur vote!
/ And what about ES&S’s extra “permission to cheat” feature? How come the national media and experts like @mattblaze (who testified to Congress) still haven’t sounded the alarm on that?! Again, u don’t even have to be a cyber-expert to understand it! @ericgeller
/ Is it because some of these scientists are too arrogant to publicly vet their views and thus live in a scientific echo chamber where these things don’t occur to them?! @mattblaze
/ Whatever the reason, they must get their heads out of the sand and make the media rounds ASAP. We have zero time to waste.
/ And yes I’m mad. If you hold yourself out as an expert in an area that directly impacts the public good, you better know what the hell you are doing bc “experts” are the ones w/ access to Congress & the MSM. Ordinary citizens like me shouldn’t have to do your job for you.
/ Here’s another piece I did on barcode voting. link.medium.com/4Fa0KNnVJU
/ I discussed the dangers of barcode voting here too. @ericgeller nybooks.com/daily/2018/11/…
/ And in here. tyt.com/stories/4vZLCH…
/ I discussed Georgia’s #BarcodeVoting crisis here. whowhatwhy.org/2019/01/02/wil…
/ So what took cybersecurity luminaries like @VerifiedVoting and @mattblaze so freaking long?! And where is the television media?!
/ Here is @ericgeller’s March 1 piece in @Politico about the barcode voting crisis in Georgia and Philly. Too bad @PhillyVotes already voted... Maybe we can still save Georgia. @stevebenen politico.com/story/2019/03/…
