Thread: What do we know about Sanders’ pre-2014 tax returns?
We know he and Jane have been evasive, they’ve repeatedly lied, and the returns still haven’t been released. From that, we know the returns are decidedly NOT “boring.” Problematic, yes. Boring, no.
We know Sanders has a history of delaying required personal financial disclosures, from the extensions he received during the primary (until the issue was moot) and from extensions he received in filing his 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Senate disclosures.
We know Sanders has a history of … how shall I put it … “sloppiness” in his personal financial disclosures. His 2014 Senate disclosure was amended four times. His 2013 form was amended five times.
He said he was “too busy” in 2015/2016 to release copies of a few returns, completed and sworn to years ago, but he was *not* too busy for more time-consuming tasks during the campaign: filing multiple amendments to his Senate Personal Disclosure forms. 🤔
11/18/2014: amended assets on his 2013 form.
8/09/2015: amended assets on his 2013 (again) and 2014 forms.
10/23/2015: amended liabilities on his 2012, 2013, and 2014 forms.
2/22/2016: amended liabilities (again) on his 2013 and 2014 forms.
They had time to prepare and file 9 or 10 other financial forms during the campaign but didn’t have the time to hand their tax returns to an aide to scan and release them. Sure.
To be clear, nothing nefarious about correcting their forms. I mean, who among us hasn’t forgotten an asset or two. Or TWENTY-TWO. 😳 Their original 2013 form listed 15 assets. They corrected it in Nov 2014 to add 14 more. Then corrected it again in Aug 2015 to add another 8.
And well of course they didn’t realize *mortgages* are debt. And failed to report them from 2007 until 2015, when I assume they finally READ THE INSTRUCTIONS that tell them, IN BOLD, that Senators are required to report them. 🤦🏼‍♀️
They also added three mortgages to their 2013 and 2014 forms, both years' amendments filed on the same day. On the 2013 form, two loan origination dates were correct, one was wrong and they put three different dates on the 2014 form, all three wrong. Stunningly sloppy.
So when it comes to their financial filings, we know they procrastinate, they “forget” things, they’re ignorant, and they’re sloppy. Gee, it’s hard to understand why they don’t want the public to see their tax returns. A real puzzle.
Is it also possible they played a bit fast and loose with some of the info on their tax returns? Maybe with charitable deductions? Maybe with the income and expenses Jane had as a “self-employed antiques dealer” in 2012 and 2013? Absolutely possible.
Why else are they still having accountants “checking” the forms they stated “under penalties of perjury” were “true, correct, and accurate” when they filed them? Why else would Sanders tell so many lies at the CNN town hall?
Jane said the returns were with an accountant. ⬇
NOTHING should be done to past returns.
No pressure? They were asked >12x. There were headlines FFS.
They said “soon” on at least six occasions in 2016.
If they’re boring, why is he still lying? Why haven’t they been released?
After three years of evasiveness and fake excuses, I don’t want Sanders to release them. I want him to request the IRS release the *original* returns they filed and signed “under penalties of perjury.” It’s the ONLY way I won’t believe they’ve been doctored. fin/
