#DrivingWhilstAutistic. A short thread.
You may have seen some mentions today, here, or in the Press. About the #DVLA wanting to bring in hundreds of thousands of #autistic #drivers for questioning.
Why have some of us spent a weekend trying to seek justice? /ctd
Because it's about love.
It's about dignity.
It's about the difference between being able to earn a living, and being crushed.
About a group so marginalised, and so 'othered'. So desperate to survive from one day to the next.../ctd
It's about a faceless organisation saying, "Hey, - let me see - how did you get that driving licence? Surely some mistake. People like you shouldn't have things like that. Give it here. Let us force you through some more humiliation to test whether you are worthy"
It's about the next organisation to try to take something away from us. To assume we're incompetent. To assume we are dangerous.
To push us ever further towards an edge of exhaustion.
And it's time to push back.
To say no.
To say, not this time. Not here. Not today.
In honour of the endless thousands of autistic people of every kind, who got their driving licence the same way as everyone else. Through the same test.
You deserve that licence.
No-one should take it away from you.
Thank you for being part of life, and all you bring to it.
And it is humiliation to tell existing safe drivers, autistic or ADHD, to report themselves for driving. To fill in questions about drugs and drink. For no reason at all.
