“Reflections on My Return Back to Pakistan, Sukoon Water, and the Limits of Social Entrepreneurship” by Rehan Adamjee link.medium.com/4c5YwZbeMU
So much to learn from this honest account of social entrepreneurship. #socent must collaborate to fix the system -especially true for safe water enterprises @safewaternet @StoneFamilyFdn @hiltonfound @JibuCo @viawater @VitolFoundation @dloHaiti
Do the challenges of Sukoon Water resonate with other safe water enterprises?

Sharing my Personal Knowledge Management system is made up of 4 types of note:

- A capture note: unedited text captured in various ways
- Organisation notes
- Distil notes: expressing capture notes in my own words
- Express notes are my original ideas

In more detail... (THREAD)
1/ Capture notes are imported into Roam and tagged #Capture:

- Articles and newsletters go into Instapaper. When I read I make highlight which syncs with Readwise
- I highlight in Kindle which syncs with Readwise
- I upload PDFs to Liner and export highlights to Roam
- I capture from physical books using the camera in the Readwise app on my phone
- I DM Tweets to Readwise
- I send podcast snippets to Roam via @AirrAudio
- I'm missing a workflow for audiobooks!! The Airr Audio app for capturing notes for podcasts and feed

I recorded 130 podcast interviews and had little traction.

This is what I've learnt about finding your niche online a.k.a. specific knowledge, personal monopoly, unique authenticity, etc.

Here's what I should have done differently.

THREAD
1/ Be different.

Choose a combination of topics that are unique to you that no one else has ever combined.

By combining 2-3 topics you're interest in with your passion and personality, you will land on your sweet spot. Be different and you will eventually find an audience.
2/ Be relevant.

Include a topic that is small but growing in popularity.

These are commonly found in emerging industries and technologies or could be an untapped historical figure. Share what you learn in public and take people on your journey.

1/ I love meetings!

..specifically the Virtual Lean Coffee kind.

I joined one today to connect with people in a virtual meet-up of an online community.

They're a great way to create an agenda that is meaningful for attendees and facilitates productive conversations.
2/ For work meetings, it might work particularly well when there are several people representing multiple projects on the call.

Here's how we did it on Zoom:

1. Collaborate via miro.com to create 3 columns with To Discuss, In Process, Done
3/
2. The meeting starts with people writing the topics they want to discuss on note cards and putting them into the To Discuss column

3. Each person introduces their topics in 15-30 seconds per note. If topics seem similar, they can be combined and rephrased by mutual agreement

Catching up on the latest goings on in the WASH sector. I can only handle so much. Full of jargony dev speak, gobbledygook. It frustrates me and pickles my brain.

It's like speaking in code. If we want to break down silos and be more inclusive, we've got do better.
Example:

"Our research focused on two aspects: the enabling environment necessary to support a cross-sectoral approach; and the degree to which improvements in long-term sustainable WASH services are prioritised and integrated into other cholera control interventions."
Why not:

"We wanted to find out what encourages everyone to work together. We also wanted to know how we can prioritise water and sanitation solutions when trying to prevent cholera."

Embracing complexity: Towards a shared understanding of funding systems change

by @kafrischen @JerooBillimoria @cheryldorsey @F_Bonnici @shivanigp among others

A thread 👇
Big idea: the current funder-grantee paradigm needs to change into one that features partnership, flexibility, longer time horizons and collaboration.

(Amen to that)
Problem: Systems change is a long and messy process. The way most donors fund is not adequate to support this crucial work.

(The gratification of funding visible things as opposed to systems change is a bit like nailing your todo list instead of spending time with your family)

"After all, what private investor would provide a company with a 20 year loan where ownership of assets is unclear?" Recommended read and singing from my hymn sheet - great piece @ircpatrick #socent
This also sums up so many investors I've spoken to about expanding their portfolio in water and sanitation enterprises (not just social enterprises) - too risky, unregulated, unclear institutional roles, seen as public sector jobs. It needs coordination at the systems level
And of course the link... ircwash.org/blog/social-en…
