A brief thought on the Omar affair: Censoring Omar is not going to re-crystallize Democratic consensus on Israel.
I’ve been torn on this issue.

On the one hand I’m very disappointed that Omar continued to carelessly invoke anti-Semitic tropes.

On the other I do agree that much of the outrage is because she’s a black Muslim woman saying this.
I also grew up in the Twin Cities, and something that does need to be part of the conversation and really hasn’t been is the extent to which dual loyalty charges have been thrown at the Somali community in Minnesota for nearly three decades now.
The whole “they’re secret terrorist supporters of sharia law!” stuff.

I don’t know if that makes Omar’s remarks better or worse, but we need to talk about it. Especially because these attacks against Minnesota Muslims certainly haven’t stopped.
But bracketing that, it’s been pretty clear for some time that we’ve been building to a fracturing of the Democratic consensus on Israel.

Part of this is because of generational turnover and demographic changes—i.e. the rise of an Islamic Democratic vote.
Part of this is because of growing divides over Israel among American Jews.
And part of this is because the Netanyahu gov’t chose political sides in domestic U.S. politics a long time ago.
Whatever the merits of censure might be, it’s not going to be able to paper over these growing fissures among Democrats on the U.S.-Israel relationship.
My two cents.

The whole contretemps has been difficult, depressing, and frustrating for those of us committed to fighting racism and anti-Semitism.
This basically sums up where I’m at, especially after reading Vargas’s comments.
