I have had a major change of heart on an important matter. I would no longer oppose the building of new nuclear power plants - even using conventional technology - on the East Coast. Let me explain why. (Thread) /1
First, as I have said over and over again about the #energytransition, this is geographical. The entire Western Interconnection should have no problem phasing out coal, gas _and_ nukes and moving to very high portions of #renewables - by 2030 or so. /2
The Midwest/Plains should be able decarbonizing electricity using a combination of new renewables and existing nukes in around that timeframe. The South will be harder, unless major offshore wind is deployed. Places like Louisiana could import power from Plains/Midwest wind. /3
But the East Coast? We are _so_ far behind. And that isn't what worries me most. It is NIMBYism. Sure, we probably _could_ deploy enough wind and solar by 2030, but we won't. Because affluent people care more about their views than the lives of future generations. Sad+true. /4
Now don't get me wrong. I think nuclear is not only the worst, but also the least practical solution to decarbonizing electricity. It takes too long to build & is too expensive - before we even get into safety and waste issues. But we _must_ decarbonize, one way or another. /5
And given the number of forces slowing deployment of wind+solar on the East Coast - utilities, captive regulators, @isonewengland and NIMBYs to name a few - I do not believe we will decarbonize sufficiently here by 2030. Not without mass social upheaval. /6
& I don't think that my sudden support of new nuclear on the East Coast is going to magically make it happen. Costs too much $/kWh. I don't think we'll build new nukes or enough wind and solar here, TBH. But I would now support it as an option. Because we're in #deepshit. /7/end
