Boosting again, since the Sac City Council is currently meeting, and the police chief just stated he doesn't know why the @sacbee_news reporter was arrested.

Me: 😐

Local folks, please call your reps. All others, particularly journalists, please let them know you're watching.

Getting some pretty harrowing details not obvious from last night, including the fact riot police from SPD were advancing on college students and a young person in a wheelchair. #StephonClark
A pastor is speaking and saying he witnessed a college student who was so traumatized by advancing riot police, she apparently started calling for her mom.

Apologies if this seems hyper local, but the Stephon Clark case is important AND last night needs continued attention.
Sacramento City Council meeting just erupted. Protestor started yelling #StephonClark's name, surrounded fairly quickly approximately 13+ police officers.
Again: I know this is hyper local, but consider what's happening here as a reminder for all of your local governments too. Part of the issue with Sacramento is that:

1. Local councilmembers don't have term limits, which means they can basically serve until they bored.
Or they just keep serving, since they want a paycheck, and not enough people pay attention to local politics to care enough to elect someone new.

It results in situations where they can keep promising to fix situations but don't, because no term limit/constituent vigilance.
Make sure this doesn't happen in your cities/towns - always know who is up for election and *care* about the promises they make, and the quality of governance they deliver.

Need a primer? I wrote one. teenvogue.com/story/how-to-d…
2. For Sacramento specifically, the council operates under the weak mayor form of government: nlc.org/mayoral-powers

Which broadly means the mayor has limited authority to act. It's all on the city manager, who is not an elected and therefore, not beholden to constituents.
(Though, this doesn't mean Steinberg gets off scot-free)

If YOUR council is under a weak mayor format, start focusing on how you can have it changed. Make sure your local electeds have power, but are also accountable to you.
(I don't often talk about local gov, but it is in fact, the most important form of government. It's what impacts our daily quality of living)

Also, this is why I keep tweeting about Sacramento. Clergy having to stand between protestors + police. Witness.
