#India's HAL designs two-in-one plane to train in peace, fight during war - Meet SPORT "Supersonic Omni Role Trainer Aircraft", basically a Tejas MK-1 "Light" stripped of high end sensors & avionics & configured as a trainer. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/hal-desi…
From cruise missiles to laser-guided bombs, antiship missiles to smart weapons & modern radars and avionic systems, a new aircraft designed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) promises a lot. The plane, for which design work is complete, doubles as a fighter trainer.
The IAF has not made any demand for it. HAL CMD R Madhavan recently said HAL no longer waits for IAF’s requirements. "We're confident of doing R&D and offering a product. We're even looking at markets outside,” he said.
HV Thakur from HAL, who conceived ORT, says: "Work started last year when we wanted to participate in the US' T-X program for new-generation trainers. Our platform was a bit expensive as it was built on the Tejas platform & capable of combat. The US wanted a pure trainer."
"There's a quantum jump in training from advanced trainer to fighter jets which impedes the pilots learning pattern, causing an overload on type training aircraft and tends to impinge on safety during fighter training or operations," HAL said in an email.
Many air forces use LIFT aircraft. This is where SpORT comes in. For example, Large Force Engagement training happens on actual squadron aircraft like the Su-30. With SPORT, we can simulate all these things. A pilot can fly in a 20-aircraft formation including 3-4 SPORT aircraft
SPORT trains pilots on many operational capabilities. All this in just 6 months, following which they only need to get used to their squadron aircraft. SPORT trains pilots on how to fire laserguided bombs, cruise missiles, etc, which currently is learnt after joining a squadron.
One thing not explained is why the Indian air force would need a LCA-based SPORT trainer, when an LCA Mk.1 trainer is already in service. Export potential on the other hand, seems good.

The expert's answer to that is that SPORT is a trainer for ALL fighter aircraft used by the air force, while the current Tejas MK-1 trainers are only used as trainers for Tejas pilots of Tejas MK-1 / 1A & MK-2 versions.
