The internet allowed for wide sharing and collaboration on unconventional theories. However often lacking were exhibits/proofs with clear sourcing/provenance. This is where I think documentaries add value: lining up hard to forge, credible sources who corroborate each other.
The reactions on #LeavingNeverland (I haven't seen it yet) got me thinking on the value of documentaries. It appears to be convincing the general public, something that the books on the matter (who apparently often had a similar thesis) didn't succeed in.
Of course the power of documentaries are a double edged sword. Cherry picked sources and editing can twist or obfuscate the truth. One example that comes to mind are the documentaries on Kurt Cobain, who afaik have defended opposite theories which means that some must manipulate.
Because manipulation is resource intensive, it seems that the longer a documentary is, and the more sources material (interviews, evidence) it provides , the harder it would be to forge its thesis. The brilliant, 7 episode long #TheKeepers comes to mind as a convincing docu.
