On the eve of #IWD2019 it is a joy to digest the groundbreaking @GlobalHlth5050 #EqualityWorks Report findings, released in #AddisAbaba earlier today

See thread below ⬇️ for summary of key findings

#GH5050 #TimesUp #BalanceforBetter
1. Gender equality. Do the Right Thing

- #Genderequality = #humanright AND prerequisite for achieving universal, sustainable social, economic & environmental progress #UHC

- Gender equality benefits everyone: men, women and gender diverse people

#GH5050 #EqualityWorks #IWD2019
2. Organisational commitment to #genderequality on the rise

- 70% (143/198) #globalhealth orgs in review publicly state commitment to gender equality in mission
- This represents improvement from 2018
- Orgs also ⬆️recognition that gender equality benefits everyone (men, trans+)
3. Policy yet to catch up on commitment to #genderequality

Support needed via:
• Mentoring, training & leadership programmes
• Targets
• Recruitment policies
• Gender in staff performance reviews & surveys
• Regular reviews of organisational efforts, accountability to staff
4. Sexual harassment = #humanrights violation, yet widespread at all levels of #globalhealth

- 1/3 @UN employees experienced harassment in last 2yrs
- Inadequate safeguards, whistleblowing protections
- Only 1/3 orgs publish policy, but this does not necessarily = good policy
5. Gender Imbalance in parental leave

- Parental leave policies and flexible working options are short on equity
- Need major shift to support gender equitable caregiving roles through the workplace
- Only 24% reviewed orgs published parental leave policies online
6. Gender unequal outcomes in power & pay

- Decision making power in hands of men (despite women representing majority of #healthworkers)
- Women lead smaller orgs
- 13.5% difference in median earnings between men and women
- Only 25% orgs reviewed published #genderpaygap data
7. Trans recognition is low

- Low recognition of trans people in organisational #gender policies
- NGOs/private sector doing best in strategy, commitment, & workplace policy

Change is possible: see UN-GLOBE recommendations for trans inclusive workforce #GH5050 #DiversityWorks
9. Transparency is key

"Transparency is the keystone of good governance. Without transparency, trust in the edifice of public institutions crumbles...Global health ought to be leading, not lagging, on transparency" says @HelenClarkNZ
