Good day for hot takes.

Tech critics have enjoyed a couple of years of being able to avoid an extremely hard ethical issue: Do you want private companies violating privacy, making quasi-governmental speech decisions and reducing the choices of billions to keep them safe?
There are some fundamental trade-offs that have to be made here. Openness vs data protection. Privacy vs safety. Platform power vs individual freedom. Government power vs citizen privacy. Authenticity vs anonymity.
Imagine each of these tradeoffs as a dial on the front of a guitar amp. For years, Facebook has tried to tweak each dial back and forth in the 3-8 range. If you take Zuckerberg's post at face value, then he is deciding to slam a bunch of those dials to either one or eleven.
Everybody can have an opinion on whether he is making the right decision, but if you are writing something that says:

1) Each dial can be set to one and ten simultaneously
2) This totally new direction completely reinforces my priors

...then you might be wrong.
Personally, I think it is difficult to judge this new direction at this point. We need to know more about the hundreds of little product decisions that will go into this and the efforts FB will take to mitigate some of the harms. I hope FB is open and transparent on both.
