I was going to see Captain Marvel today out of...idk, a sense of duty? I never MIND watching Marvel movies the first time; they're entertaining, just not rewatchable for me. I got all the way to buying the ticket and realized, "I really DO NOT WANT to see this." Here's why.
#tw #transphobia This movie has characters checking a character's genitals to determine if it's male or female and it's meant to be a joke. Just reading about it feels like violence to me. It's so distasteful. I hate this.
The movie has been sold as LOOK THIS IS A WOMAN SUPERHERO, like they deserve a cookie for taking more than a decade to have a woman headlining a movie. It's patronizing and frankly fucking irritating.
I don't know about the movie itself, aside from the scene of transphobia, but the marketing reeks of White Feminism - the uninclusive and barfingly common form of American feminism that's really only out to help white cis women.
I don't get shit out of this. Nothing. I'm not going to pay $10 to and two hours of my life to pay the Woman Tax that Marvel is demanding we pay.

I totally get why this movie appeals to many others and won't judge, but I have the taste of dirt in my mouth over it. Not happening.
The greatest compliment I can give the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that it's consistent. There's no other movie franchise that's produced this many "slightly better than mediocre" movies that will reliably entertain one time around.

Just fucking stay in your lane MCU.
Do what you're good at, keep earning bank, please bankroll more movies like Black Panther.

I'm not going to see Captain Marvel and I feel really grumpy about it coming out on International Women's Day. SO FUCKING PATRONIZING.
I can't be the only one who feels like the marketing is the "How do you do, Fellow Kids?" of feminism. An aggressively sexist corporation tromping around saying, "Hey look how feminist we are!"

Hopefully nobody's forgotten the crap they do to Black Widow.
Anyhoo, I write tons of (essentially) great female superheroes, I read and watch tons of (essentially) great female superheroes, and I just don't have to get my fix from something this flawed and patronizing and offensive. I'm gonna go reread Dreadnought by @1aprildaniels, byeee
(And no, I feel no responsibility whatsoever to make this movie successful so Marvel lets more women headline. They are invited to go fuck themselves, however.)
(And if i have to sit in a theater of people laughing at a transphobic joke, I will probably burst into tears and I just don't have to do it.)
