Today after many months not doing a national cable news spot, I happily joined my old @MSNBC colleagues. But almost immediately after being on I received emails to my campaign email saying I “could d*e” and I should “kill myself.”
In a crowded City Council race I am one of the few minorities running and am doing so in a district where the longtime retiring incumbent is white. Lastly, I would be the first POC to represent the 90K residents of District 7.
My challenge is to convince voters that my leadership experience and ideas would serve the district. Not that the color of my skin or my ethnic heritage should not be disqualifiers.
I do not think these threats speak to diversity or acceptance of this city or district. But for some change fuels hate. Plain and simple. I’m not scared or angry, just sad. I believe in the ideals of meritocracy and equality, and those give me hope. Onward. Naveed
