@BTS_twt #MapOfTheSoul Persona theory

What’s a Map of the Soul? Mentioned by Jin in 1 of the HYYH Notes & a
part of Murray Stein’s title of his book (Jung’s Map of the Soul), it appears to be a relevant term in the BU.

The “Soul” meant in this term, though, seems different. +
+The book Jung’s Map of the Soul, w/c is officially sold in BigHit shop, is a book about Jung’s psychoanalytic concepts & theory. In this book, the word “Psyche” is often used & for good reason—it comes from the Greek word ‘psychē’ w/c means SOUL. Psyche/Psique also means mind+
+or personality. Jung’s Map of the Soul then is another phrase for Jung’s Map of the Mind/Personality—a blueprint of one’s unconscious or inner self.

In Latin, ANIMA means “soul” while ANIMUS means “spirit.” Both are used interchangeably to mean “inner world of persons” acc to+

To Jung, the psyche & soul AND ANIMA are interchangeable,& this kind of ‘Soul’ is probably what Jin references in the Notes & Epiphany.

How does the SOUL connect to PERSONA? What does @BTS_twt <MAP OF THE SOUL: PERSONA> signify?

The SOUL for+
+Jung is ANIMA, & ANIMA for him is the “hidden inner side of a man’s personality” (Stein). ANIMUS on the other hand is the “hidden inner side of a woman’s personality” (Stein). If we were to divide the Love Yourself albums into Jung’s Structure or MAP of the PSYCHE/SOUL, it‘d go+
+like this:

Jung believes that we all have feminine & masculine qualities, & along with the ANIMA & ANIMUS, there’s the SHADOW in the inner WORLD. It seems apt to think of these four like a quadrant,+
+ although the ANIMUS and ANIMA are considered as relative archetypes & counted as only ONE of the 4 MAIN ARCHETYPES below.

Like the ANIMA & ANIMUS, we all have a SHADOW & PERSONA. The SHADOW & PERSONA “are a study in contrasts. If one is blond, the other is dark; if one is+
+rational, the other is emotional… ...The one complements—or more often opposes—the other. Persona and shadow are usually more or less exact opposites of one another, and yet they are as close as twins” (Stein)

We’ve seen another example of SHADOW & PERSONA in the characters+
+DEMIAN & SINCLAIR from Demian by Hermann Hesse too. And have seen these two archetypes reference in @BTS_twt FAKE LOVE choreo or MV as well. The SHADOW is like our dark hidden side. It’s a part of us that has been suppressed since it induces mental & emotional conflicts. It’s+
+an unconventional side of us that’s often thought of as “evil.” This is in contrast to the PERSONA, the mask or fake side we employ in public.

The PERSONA acts as an impression or image/label that we want to be+
+seen as. It forms our “psychosocial identity.” We play a role everyday, & Jung acknowledges that it helps us function as social beings & guide our interactions w/ others w/o causing conflict. As a result, the PERSONA covers or hides our true feelings for the sake of being+
+agreeable & likable. This can be tiring to us. A PERSONA needs everyday maintenance; thereby, one limits him or herself into this role he or she built. W/ this limitation, he or she traps oneself into an illusory life—a hellish machination of oneself. The self-torment the+
+PERSONA feels is then delegated to the SHADOW. Though SHADOW is often seen as bad, Jung thinks that it is “merely somewhat inferior, primitive, unadapted, and awkward; not wholly bad.” We rarely see our SHADOW until we notice its projection on others, when we blame someone &+
+not see the fault in ourselves. As much as the PERSONA is a comfort zone, our SHADOW takes the brunt of our bottled up feelings until it becomes big enough to swallow us all & our PERSONA fumbles to not slip.

There is hope however. Our PSYCHE is not fixed. It changes & develops+
+throughout our lifespan. For Jung, INDIVIDUATION, a process of self-fulfillment, is a process of maturation, a psychic parallel to the physical GROWTH & AGING. In this process, one aims to be an integrated being, a union of PERSONA & SHADOW. For Jung, this is one of the basic+
+PRINCIPLES in the Journey of the Psyche:

⭐️OPPOSITES: Greater contrast, greater psychic energy
⭐️EQUIVALENCE: Equal energy to each opposites (e.g.SHADOW/PERSONA)
⭐️ENTROPY: Opposites blend together (connected to INVIDUATION process)

Our self-growth happens most often @ the+
+unconscious level & so we grow up into a person we don’t usually consciously choose to become. We’re influenced by people & our environment, by a Zeitgeist or Spirit of the times. Our Psyche also operates in the Principle of HOMEOSTASIS, our striving towards balance in life.+
+Naturally, our lives are a continuous fight for balance. We’re like heroes in our own stories, undergoing a cycle of ups & downs. The Journey of the Psyche is the same as the HERO. Jung also enumerates ARCHETYPAL STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT, referring to the EVOLUTION OF A HERO or+
+the Development of the EGO-CONSCIOUSNESS or EGO. The ego/consciousness is an organizer & balancer of the conscious & unconscious qualities of our psyche, giving us identity & purpose. The ego isn’t the same as the SELF, w/c is the WHOLE PSYCHE (conscious+unconscious). Mandala+
+symbolizes the SELF to indicate its wholeness.

The EVOLUTION OF A HERO by Jung was derived from the traditions of the Winnebago tribe in North America:

-most primitive,infantile
-physical needs dominate
-represented by animals like fox+

#MapOfTheSoul @BTS_twt
2.) HARE
-individual starts adapting
-modifies behavior & infantile urges of Trickster+

-from a hero in a myth cycle, the youngest of 10 bros.
-has to pass many archetypal tests
-represents the struggles of teens & young adults & the psyche coming to terms w/ societal pressures

-final stage
-dual sides of human nature
-struggle between opposites
-reflects what improvements to be made on the psyche & resolving the shadow.+

For Jung, these archetypal stages are in myths & legends all around the world. Thru these stories, we’re able to understand the PSYCHE & its growth or development. The HERO for Jung also signifies the emerging ego-consciousness & its efforts to grow. We continue to develop until+
+old age. Jung is one of the psychological lifespan theorists because he argues that we develop psyche even past middle age. He believes that it is a lifelong developmental process. Jung, in an article about “The Stages of Life” also describes this psychological development in+
the imagery of sunrise, sun @ noon, & sunset. @BTS_twt Love Yourself albums & even the upcoming #MapOfTheSoul : Persona album colors seem to reflect these “stages”:

I. Athlete
II. Warrior
III. Statement
IV. Spirit

These stages are also connected to+

+3 births:

1ST BIRTH: Physical growth
2ND BIRTH: Birth of the Ego (centre of consciousness & sense of identity)
3RD BIRTH: Birth of Consciousness(spiritual & internal)

How do all these relate to PERSONA & or the MAP OF THE SOUL?

+Jung spoke of many stages/phases, but these stages/phases are all either specific or general. The essence is the most important. The goal of INDIVIDUATION & the SELF is WHOLENESS, & through different stages/phases in life, we strive to be whole & completely ourselves, to be+
+unbroken. PERSONALITY is said to be the “complete realization of our whole being,” (Jung) but it’s an unattainable goal, to say the least. There’s no time limit for pursuing this ideal, though, since as said before the INDIVIDUATION process is lifelong.

We end this thread+
+then w/ an elaboration of some of this process & its relation to PERSONA.

INDIVIDUATION has two main phases, & it’s said to correspond to 2 HALVES of our lives. It’s on the 1ST PHASE or 1ST HALF of life that PERSONA is established. This 1st Phase is an “initiation” to the+
+EXTERNAL WORLD. The beginning of this phase is in the unity of opposites (light/dark) in the unconscious. Erich Neumann, Jung’s follower, names this state of unity as “uroboric”—from the Egyptian symbol “Uroboros” w/c is a snake eating its own tail, symbolizing the timeless &+
+never-ending cycle of life & death. In BTS’s music, this is the state of RINGWANDERUNG, of moving in circles on a foggy/smoky mountain path.

The SHADOW is in the unconscious & can’t fully emerge from it & into our consciousness, yet the 1st Phase of INDIVIDUATION also involves+
+the unearthing & awareness to some of it. This is because one’s acceptance of the SHADOW, your subjective darkness, is the 1st step or starting point to wholeness—or INDIVIDUATION.

The consciousness develops in the 1st Phase, & we see Jung categorizing the state of+
+consciousness in the following order that’s reminiscent of the 3 births above:

1. Anarchic or Chaotic State: sporadic recognition of- or knowing of connections (infancy)

2. Monarchic or Monistic State: development of ego or sense of identity—aka “unbearable age” (childhood)+
+ 3. Divided or Dualistic State: awareness of inner tensions or divisions (puberty to middle age)

Through experiencing these states of consciousness one after another, the youth in the 1st Half or 1st Phase encounters conflicts w/in oneself & the outside. Confusions abound.+
+Consequently, the goals of the 1st Phase are to ADAPT to the EXTERNAL WORLD and to PROTECT the psyche, so a PERSONA(s) is established.

As explained briefly above, a PERSONA is a functional psychosocial identity. Jolande Jacobi clarified that persona “involves not only psychic+
+qualities but also forms of social behavior & our habits of personal appearance, posture, gait, dress, facial expression, the quality of our smile & our frown, even our way of wearing our hair.”

There are two types of PERSONA: healthy & unhealthy. An UNHEALTHY PERSONA, by the+
+name itself, is something we hope to avoid or grow out of. “The persona… is a compromise between individual & society as to what a man should appear to be,” said Jung.

But if you’re hiding much of your true self under a persona that it becomes your comfort zone out of fear &+
+feelings of inadequacy, the mask becomes mechanical. This type of persona is inscrutable & or seemingly affixed even when you’re meeting different people or are embroiled in different situations. This then leads to fake & insincere interactions. Because the persona or mask is+
+frozen on oneself, the individual behind it withers away, a fragment of his or herself. Having this type of persona may lead to a state where there’s a lack of distinction between persona & your real self, & you can’t set aside this unhealthy persona because of dependence—a+
+parasite soon overtaking its host.

In contrast, a HEALTHY PERSONA must have all 3 FACTORS:

🎭EGO-IDEAL/WISH-IMAGE: a model of behavior & nature one wishes to have

-This factor characterizes the versatility of one’s mask or persona acc. to the current situation as you like or+
+see fit. This is the opposite of an unhealthy persona’s rigid quality.

🎭 2.) EXPECTATIONS OF OTHERS/SOCIETY: the milieu model of a person

-This factor comprises of the appropriateness of one’s mask or persona to one’s own role(e.g. impartiality of a judge at court). W/ this+
+factor, one’s persona is a reliable asset to society & in turn to oneself as it teaches you how to adapt & solve conflicts.

🎭 3.) REALITY OF PERSONALITY: realistic limitations on realizing ideals or expectations

-This factor involves grounding your own & others’ expectations+
+acc. to your real personality or what you are capable of. A healthy & well-functioning persona is a role you graciously play in the society based on your own style & w/o losing your true nature.

The PERSONA then must be elastic & permeable. It must effectively regulate/filter+
+bet. the inner (ego) & outer world. It is an “intellectual” as opposed to the ANIMA, w/c is “sentimental” (Jacobi), yet both PERSONA & ANIMA complement one another as the former reflects the outside world while the latter reflects the inner side of a person. The ANIMA(& ANIMUS)+
+are the focus of the 2nd Phase or 2nd Half of Life, but that’s a topic for another time.
