Next up: tracing the black box of serverless by Matt Williams #ServerlessDaysBOS
Matt recently adopted - learned what many parents have learned - babies need a lot of feeding. Wanted to start using an app to track how much his daughter is consuming - all existing apps out there suck #ServerlessDaysBOS
(side note: co-worker has titled this section DadOps)
@Technovangelist felt he could build a better baby feeding app #ServerlessDaysBOS
Used a tool called coda, had lambda writing to coda, ability to integrate Alexa #ServerlessDaysBOS
Getting data into coda - provide API token, get document id, get table id, get column I'd, post data that is the amount of formula given #ServerlessDaysBOS
And it just works. No errors. Data shows up where and when it's supposed to. But it's slow - how do you figure out where the problem is when there's no "problem" #ServerlessDaysBOS
Go to the three pillars of observability - metrics, logs, traces. As soon as you create a lambda it shows you basic metics like duration, invocation, etc #ServerlessDaysBOS
Can also write custom metics relevant to the actual app. Can get more granular timing data by just measuring and looking at aggregate - but is that actually useful? #ServerlessDaysBOS
Next you can go to logs. Structured logs are good for understanding and finding what's going on. #ServerlessDaysBOS
Then you get to traces. Shows request based view of what is happening. In lambda you just check a checkbox and you're good to go #ServerlessDaysBOS
Now you can dig in to x-ray and look request by request. Matt found an error in API gateway that was hidden before since he doesn't return the code #ServerlessDaysBOS
But still don't know what's going on. To get more detail - can add decorators to capture more data within the code #ServerlessDaysBOS
Now there's much more detail in x-ray view. Able to see that a lot of his time was spent getting static values. Hard coded those in the function instead and finally improved performance #ServerlessDaysBOS
To get even more you can add annotations and get the ability to narrow down x-ray traces to those annotations #ServerlessDaysBOS
And even in datadog you get all three traces logs and metrics in one view #ServerlessDaysBOS
