Finally we have the closing keynote for @ServerlessBOS - How AWS builds serverless services using serverless from Chris Munns
Serverless is changing how software is being built in the software industry - and it's no different within AWS itself #ServerlessDaysBOS
Amazon started with a monolith and siloed org to the two person teams with full accountability and ownership #ServerlessDaysBOS
And those teams build microservices - with many many services and many dependencies #ServerlessDaysBOS
S3 launched with 8 microservices. Today it's over 235 microservices #ServerlessDaysBOS
The two pizza teams are responsible for their product - the rest they don't! Ie deployment, CI/CD, logging, API tools, etc #ServerlessDaysBOS
All tools should be self service, language agnostic, encourage best practice, single purpose services #ServerlessDaysBOS
All these help the teams just focus on their product and they don't need to think about the rest #ServerlessDaysBOS
Amazon has built all the tools for themselves that they might ever need. This leads to happy developers #ServerlessDaysBOS
Now they have teams building microservices with continuous delivery in multiple environments which leads to lots of deploys #ServerlessDaysBOS
But these tests still had to care about VM configuration, scaling, etc #ServerlessDaysBOS
As teams are deploying more to more regions, ops becomes a big burden #ServerlessDaysBOS
On launch of lambda, they saw lots of repeated patterns - ie DLQ that alarms and redrives failed invocation #ServerlessDaysBOS
So AWS launched serverless application repository to house these repeated structures and allow easy copy and setup #ServerlessDaysBOS
And the app repo itself is built with serverless technology #ServerlessDaysBOS
Is it fully serverless? No there's one ec2 instance to test it it's up. If lambda goes down and you have a Lana running health checks then you're out of luck #ServerlessDaysBOS
So what's the biggest pain points? Limits, scoping the size, boundaries, improving alarms and monitoring #ServerlessDaysBOS
(and here's where I had to dip out early - thanks for following along with my life tweeting everyone!)
