My longtime friend #BarbaraHammer has died. She was an extraordinary talent, a brilliant filmmaker, a gutsy, fabulous, radical af, deeply engaged lesbian feminist & I loved her madly for her brave unconquerable self & her larger than life humanity which impelled all her work. 💜
I met #BarbaraHammer three decades ago through my late friend, the photographer #TeeCorinne. Both these iconoclastic #lesbian artists taught us that there was a gaze that not only was not male, but was not straight. They showed us the lesbian feminist lens. What vision they had.
I cannot express strongly enough how much more I was taught to see by #BarbaraHammer. The risks she took illumined a world previously unseen.

Barbara was a lover, a teacher, an artist, a radical political voice.
My G-d I shall miss her and her huge huge brave heart. 💜

How could we not love Barbara?

She modeled how to grow old, live with #cancer, be an out proud loud #lesbian even as she never stopped working & creating & loving her sweetheart, her friends, her colleagues, a whole new generation of lesbian filmmakers. 💜

#BarbaraHammer was a filmmaker but she also painted and drew and made mixed media. Everything she did engaged you and pulled you in, shifted the narrative you thought you knew about femaleness. 💜

Barbara's work appears in two of my books and various interviews I have done with her over the years are available online. @womenmakemovies has her filmography. And there is a bibliography of other work online.

Barbara was fun and had a great laugh.

Barbara traveled everywhere and always made new friends.

#BarbaraHammer was a #lesbian for the ages.
What a life of unparalleled work and activism.
Everyone who knew and loved her will go on missing her forever. 💜

If you did not know #BarbaraHammer's work, this is Barbara talking about what she called "palliative art," which was the work she was doing on the "art of dying." There was nothing she did that didn't incorporate the intersection of women's lives.
