My thoughts on -
@JennyCohn1's response to
@MattBlaze's comments on an article by
@KimZetter

and the entire thing upsets me because I know computers well enough to know that - unlike Mr. Blaze asserts - they are inherently unsecurable. 👉.👈

Why is this even a discussion?

1/
@jennycohn1 @mattblaze @KimZetter Open source software is in not any more secure than proprietary software. The argument is like saying it's harder to for someone to break into your home if you set the tumblers in your door lock yourself when a malevolent insider or virus is going to use the window.

2/
@jennycohn1 @mattblaze @KimZetter I get the argument - proprietary software is sort of like leaving the door unlocked (to run the analogy) and better hardware standards add at least some type of lock to the windows.
3/
@jennycohn1 @mattblaze @KimZetter But here's the thing - if the soft underbelly can be gotten to by friends - it can be gotten to by foes.
Often times by exploiting friends (as did a phishing virus exploit the DNC hack - it didn't need to know the tumblers - it only needed ask a DNC friendly use his key.
4/
@jennycohn1 @mattblaze @KimZetter And over and over I see ppl totaly discount scanners. It is for that reason alone that if I were hacking - that is THE goto device I'd hack. Those are computers too.
5/
@jennycohn1 @mattblaze @KimZetter And Internet access? Sorry but who cares? Yes, it's a terrible idea but we have machines floating around with cellular modems in them. The ultimate way to hack via bypassing the Internet (or any net other then then cellular net) completely.
6/
@jennycohn1 @mattblaze @KimZetter And ballot marking devices? Are you effing kidding me?

I'm not that inclined to be very technical because everybody seems to forget how often our computers are followed by facebook or outright phished.
7/
@jennycohn1 @mattblaze @KimZetter And from what I've read so far about these machines they are actually magnitudes of order simpler than your tablet or phone (think - what were you using 20 years ago for a PC - I haven't seen anything more stellar in voting tech yet).
8/
@jennycohn1 @mattblaze @KimZetter So this is sort of an amorphous bitch and gripe because no matter how hard I see people actually diving into the technicals that nobody wants to read - I still hear things come up constantly like handmarked then scanned is good.
And I want to pull my hair out.
9/
@jennycohn1 @mattblaze @KimZetter You know what IS good?

#Handcounted #HandMarkedPaperBallots with a secure chain of custody.

If you leave any single componant to a computer or hackable device then just throw the whole damn thing on a computer.
10/
@jennycohn1 @mattblaze @KimZetter And I'm also really peeved that nowhere near enough people are paying attention to #ElectionIntegrity.

I have read the words "I have faith" at least half a dozen times today regarding elections and people showing up at the polls in disuasion of discussing the machines.
11/
@jennycohn1 @mattblaze @KimZetter The most sucessful hack the GOP has performed on America was to convince people that ANY kind of electronics is acceptable in our elections. ANY.

If you're talking about voting them out, but not talking about election integrity - you're not talking about voting them out.
