There is a rise of "ethno-nationalism" in the western world. But note that is not as much in Europe as in USA, Australia, Canada which ironically are countries built by European immigration after exterminating the indigenous population. #NewZealandTerroristAttack
I've had some interactions with Nordic etho-nationalists living in the US on social media. The phenomenon is pretty strange given that these people themselves were immigrants to the lands they are living in 1-3 generations ago.
A few observations I had about these people:
1. They are in the process of questioning and negotiating their Christian identity. They want to decouple Christianity from being white because there is an influx of Christian immigrants from Latin America & Africa. No diff otherwise.
Christianity isn't useful for the "us vs them".
2. Hence they mine pre-Christian Pagan culture for an 'identity'. They have appropriated Pagan symbols which they use as a recruitment tool. 3. They call themselves 'folkish' or 'folk-right'
4. They are against multiculturalism but claim they aren't against different cultures. But for them a Buddhist should remain in E. Asia, a Hindu in India & a Muslim in Arabia. Them coming to their 'domain' which is US, Canada, Australia is a punishable offense.
5. Also there is anti-Semitism in this group. Another reason they've disassociated themselves from Christianity is because it was a Hebraic/middle eastern imposition on "white people". Hence keep the Hebrews (Jews) out. Though Jews today in US look more white than middle eastern.
6. "Whiteness" was initially limited to Anglo-Saxons. Even the Irish weren't considered white. Now the term white stands for all caucasian Europeans. This ethno-nationalist group isn't really ethno but racist as they call themselves white but not as a particular ethnic group.
Where have we seen such crazy ideas before? It was Nazism. Nazism iwas basically an etho-nationalist movement which appropriated "Ārya" from Indian Pagans(Hindus), anti-Semitism from Christianity.
The New Zealand terrorist is a product of this ideology. His act of terror wasn't really targeted at Islam but at "non-whites". Tomorrow it could be Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists or even brown Christians. This is not an Islamophobic attack but a racist attack. This is Nazism 2.0.
.@EPButler I've touched on this before about white supremacists appropriation of Paganism. I feel this could endanger the revival of Paganism as Pagan symbols would go on to be associated with terrorism like Swastika was with the Nazis.
Thread:
Also to add, these so called followers of folk-religion don't have any respect for Native American pagans. In fact the abhorrent condition of Native Americans is taken as a symbol of victory and superiority of white people in their 'domain'.
