A recent study found that 40 percent of adults in the UK did not know what ‘antisemitism’ meant. *40 percent*. To combat antisemitism, we need to understand it. So without judgment, without reproach, this is what I've learned it means.. /1

Antisemitism, simply stated, is the hatred of Jewish ppl and Judaism. It's an ancient bigotry that has had thousands of years to manifest and mutate. It's why AS might feel so complex. This recognised definition is used by the UK gov. /2

‘Antisemitism’ the word can be confusing. When you oppose it, you're ‘anti-antisemitism’. Unlike other antis, like antiracism, the double negative is awkward. Ppl say they're ‘fighting AS’ or ‘combatting’ it. /3
The ‘Semitic’ part is based on an 18th century pseudo-scientific racial theory. Now discredited, it's only used in linguistics. When deployed for bigotry it was *solely* targeted at Jewish ppl. Spelling antisemitism as one word helps avoid confusion or deliberate undermining. /4
The word ‘antisemitism’ was mainstreamed by Jew-hater Wilhelm Marr in the 1870s to make his bigotry sound more scientific. He founded the ‘League of Antisemites’ in 1879 but later in life regretted it. /5

Antisemitism is full of contradictions because it's about us non-Jews. How we shape the world and fit minorities into it. Jewish ppl become a handy scapegoat at times of upheaval for non-Jews. It's why antisemitism seems to come in so many seemingly opposing forms. /6
At its core antisemitism is a giant conspiracy theory. Antisemites propagate the perception of Jewish ppl as ‘elites’ and nefarious. This fits neatly into their self-righteous fallacy that they're ‘punching up’. It's also why AS can be found on the left AND right of politics. /7
To combat antisemitism, knowledge is power. You've taken the first steps and now you're ready to dive deeper. Jump in, keep learning. Get ready to stand up and speak out. /8 #BeLouder #ActiveAllies
