This article ... works both as a look at America's gun pathology & a metaphor for most Americans' regard for the teaching profession.

Is there any other country on earth treating teachers like this?

2/ These drills are expensive, traumatizing, not researched backed, and go against everything educators know about building safe spaces for children.

They are also increasing mandated by states.

3/ These drills are wrong in school. Period.

4/ These drills are, of course, a new section of the #schooltoprison pipeline, not dissimilar to the current approach to families who arrive at the border.

5/ High time for superintendents, school broads, and educators of conscience to allocate their budgets and time to reducing trauma, not creating it.

8/ I am not sure that engaging rhymes are the answer:

"Using fun characters and engaging rhymes, The Lockdown Drill explains safe emergency practices to young children in a non-threatening manner."
10/ "Some companies that originally sold armor to law enforcement or military markets have since expanded into the schools market with personal protection products."

11/ This seems a better approach:

“I think as educators we’re trained to nurture kids and foster kids, and our first instinct is to not shoot or harm them,” he said. “What we need is more caring adults in these kids’ lives, not more guns.”

13/ Does your workplace look like this?

Do states mandate that other professionals that serve children - lawyers, doctors, therapists, flight attendants & pilots, sports coaches, librarians, museum curators, non-profit program staff, restaurant staff - do these drills?
Hard to find another country that pays more lip-service to the importance of teachers, then consistently degrades, diminishes, and disregards them. /end
