For those wondering how I became Catholic —

Commense Thread:
I have always considered reality and the nature of reality to be extremely important.

After all, how can one know how to live life properly without knowing first if there is an afterlife, or a purpose to fulfill in life etc. Or if we should #YOLO (hedonism).
Both my parents were self confessed hippies who came from religious backgrounds but raised me as a nothing.

Totally blank slated.

As a result I just absorbed what I was taught in school which quickly lead me to atheism.
However throughout my life I have had some supernatural experiences so I was forced to reject atheism based on this reasoning and then became a new type of nothing, and agnostic (someone who admits they are without knowledge of ultimate reality).
I explored various religious ideas including Hinduism (a royal mess imo), and Buddhism (nihilism for spiritualists).

Buddhism literally led me nowwhere. It’s based on the concept that everything is ultimately nothing.
After coming to this dead end, I decided to look for the next idea to explore (yes I was just systematically going through religions like a list to find the right one by process of elimination over several years).
Christianity was at the bottom of my list right above Judaism and Islam.

Yes there are several other world views and religions that I was prepared to consider before I considered Christianity.

So I started thinking about the concept of God, and the nature of God etc. And listening to debates about God’s existence and talking to many people about it.

(I get kinda obsessed when considering a new idea.)

Then it clicked. I’ll talk about this part in detail another time.
So after I had realised that God was a plausible concept and quite reasonable actually then I started to consider which (if any) religion could correctly add to this understanding.
Again I went through them systematically and the apostle accounts of Jesus’s claims and Jesus’s resurrection and miracles etc. convinced me that Christianity was the one to most seriously consider.
Then I just had the tiny matter of deciding which of 30,000 different Christian denominations to join.
I read a dozen books on Christianity and considered many different perspectives. I listened to debates.

I chatted with Christians of various denominations. Did online research etc.

I even tweeted some of my questions!
As things stand Catholicism seems like the most logical option because it includes Christian tradition from a time when most people couldn’t read or write.

I don’t believe everything is written in the Bible. I believe the Bible is one part of Christian teachings.
But even then I learned that the Catholic Church has division within it.

You’ve got the Eastern Orthodox Catholic Church (not welcoming to Westeners is what I heard).

The progressive Novus Ordo (New Order) arm of the Roman Catholic Church.

The Traditional Roman Catholics.

So as things stand I’m going with Traditional Roman Catholic.

And I’m very happy with it although naturally I do still have many questions.

Since accepting the possibility of a God of the Abrahamic kind the rest has been a 6 month ongoing process.
And I will also add that I deal with doubts on a daily basis.

I have a skeptical and questioning mind.

However they have not thus far been sufficient to take me back to agnosticism or atheism.

Christianity explains a lot.
