Unpopular opinion: if we spent half the money people are collectively putting toward similarly progressive candidates to try and get them to national stages toward funding progressive grassroots movements, we would be able to push whoever the eventual candidate is to the left
But forreal, do you realize how far what's considered "not enough money" for a political campaign would take you in terms of actual community organizers on the ground in each majority city?
I'm sorry, but I just can't see any presidential campaign as truly progressive when we're having to invest millions of dollars in a cult of personality and hyper-individualism instead of doing the bare minimum for elections & giving more directly to those most directly impacted.
Always look at what the media loves covering in detail. If they spend an inordinate time and resources on the ins and outs something, that thing is probably not going to be all that disruptive to systems of oppression.
I always say to engage in the political system. But I think that for the average person, participating in elections should become as routine as a dental cleaning, and that local political engaging needs to be happening on the daily just like brushing your teeth or flossing.
The impulse now is to treat progressive political campaigns as the biggest effort we all need to be pushing. Some people absolutely need to be doing that 24/7. For the majority, we are wasting resources by fixating on the ins and outs of campaigns. Agitate *whoever* is in office.
It reminds me of how neocons have this system of a handful of people steadily passing bills state by state while liberals think packing the streets will change the systems. Your GOTV will not work if the polling sites are gone or districts all redrawn. Outthink oppression.
Good hearts, genuine efforts, hard work, and well-meaning people will not win by default when the other side is morally bankrupt and worships greed. This is not a fairytale. They will tear gas protectors, imprison young people, and assassinate leaders while wearing a flag pin.
Get a decent candidate up there. My bar is low. I will vote for them. What I dream for is the day when ANY candidate knows to take the power of the streets very seriously when making any decision, and that their accountability isn't being held on some honor system.
Change your local city. Actually change it. Because with that infrastructure in place, your national people will have little option but to follow. This top down approach of "this time, the right person will do it" is so backwards.
