Alright. Quick GSAs clinic for all of you.

This will be a thread. I'm not sure how long it will be.

GSAs is the acronym of Gay Straight Alliances.

These are student led orgs in schools where they support each other. Typically over the lunch hour, where they offer mutual support.

Not only is this good for those kids...

It's also really good public policy.

Take this UBS study, for example: news.ubc.ca/2014/01/20/gay…

Note the findings.

In schools with GSAs, suicide ideation (thoughts of suicide) halved for LGBTQ students.

Yes, halved.

And that's not the half of it.

For heterosexual boys, they were half as likely to attempt suicide compared to schools without a GSA.

Do 👏 you 👏 understand? 👏

There will be a quiz later.

GSAs first entered the public discourse in Alberta when then MLA, now MP, @KentHehr introduced #Motion503.

Which asked the province and school to support the formation of GSAs when/where students wanted them.

This would go well.

Until it didn't.

This was the vote break down. Liberals and the NDP were unanimous in their support. The Wildrose unanimously against, with the Prentice PCs split.

This soon brought an uproar. And led to folks looking closer at the issue.

Soon, #Bill202 would be tabled by now retired MLA @LaurieBlakeman. FYI, she would be an excellent person to follow (#FF). She is, to quote a friend of mine, "fierce."

However, the PCs then introduced a bit of a Frankenstein bill that sought to "solve" the issue.

#Bill10 was... Bad.

It was bad until it wasn't.

Public pressure won the day, leading to amendments to the bill.

(Special shoutouts to @richardeinarson, @mikesbloggity, @KentHehr, the ND caucus, and tens of thousands of Albertans who stood up for kids.)

You would assume this would be the end of the story.

Sadly, it was not.

There were court challenges (which were defeated): globalnews.ca/news/4300217/a…

There are dozens of schools still opposed to GSAs: globalnews.ca/news/4427073/a…

The UCP took on the worst of both worlds of its two legacy organizations.

And redoubled down on eliminating GSAs.

And prominent members of the UCP continued to lead a very public battle - comparing pride flags to swastikas.

And this election two UCP candidates (so far) resigned because of their bigotry.

2- edmonton.ctvnews.ca/mobile/ucp-can…

And, today, Kenney announced he would roll back Bill 10 and Bill 24.

As you can tell, I am not a fan.

In closing, I leave you with one of the best @rickmercer rants of all time - where he calls out Kenney, the UCP, and Alberta's conservative movement for picking on school kids.

This election, your vote matters.

And you have a choice to make. #ableg #abvote
