Engineering teams are often busy and do not have any extra time to spend on interviews. That’s why the interview process has to be streamlined such that the time spent is fully optimised.

Here are the stages to have in your technical interview journey that would help get the best out of the applicants.
1. Job Listing/Description/Specification:- please take your time to work on this.

Be as detailed as possible. Talk about the job role, description, team culture & technologies too. Leave no room for assumptions.

2. CV Vetting: this can be automated, but ensure you manually review the CVs of the shortlisted candidates again.

3. Self Scoring Coding Test: this stage is mostly to verify that the candidates can code, have basic problem-solving skills & understand the basics of CS. There are several platforms available for this. This step is not enough so you’ll need to do more.

4. Live Code Pairing: This is where the candidate gets to demonstrate that they can actually do the work if they eventually get selected. Don’t just copy & paste questions. Use a technical problem/challenge that your team has experienced but refine it.

The whole idea is that the questions at this stage should be similar to what the developer will end up working on. I have seen questions like build a streamlined version of our application, etc.

5. Technical Leadership & Culture Fit: Only a few candidates make it to this stage. This stage varies depending on the seniority requirement for the role. If it’s a senior role, then you need to dig deep into the technical leadership skills of the candidates.
This is when you ask questions around team alignment, conflict resolution, mentorship skills, etc. On the other hand, if it’s a regular developer role, then you might focus on just the cultural fit for the team.
