The #DreamLifter is a one-of-a-kind machine. There are only 4 operational in the world, and unlike her sisters, she has a few quirks singular to her.. As you board, the first one reveals itself.. You board and deplane using the R1 door instead of the L1 like on a regular #B747
The #cockpit is the same as a regular #B747, and so the pre-#flight is identical. We send for the route by datalink and it’s automatically loaded into our Flight Management System, so all we do is check against the release, compare, confirm and execute..
Now, what really makes the #DreamLifter so special? Unlike any other #B747, these 4 jets were modified to be loaded via a swing-tail that opens using a specialized support system only available in #Seattle, #Charleston, #Taranto and #Nagoya..
Since the tail swings open, conventional cabling and hydraulics can’t be routed the traditional way, so #Boeing devised a system that routes all flight control cables to the horizontal/vertical stabilizer as well as the hydraulics along the hinge point on the left side of the jet
Another unique feature of this amazing jet is the fact that since the cargo area is unpressurized, there’s no need for a pressure bulkhead. You can see all the way through to the hydraulics and jack screw that moves the trimmable horizontal stabilizer!
At 65,000 cubic feet and 113.5 tons capacity, it’s the largest operational jet #freighter in the world by volume, and despite the added form drag, still able to cruise between Mach 0.82 and 0.85 and altitudes up to 43,000 feet! Not bad for such an enormous airplane!

So why do we board via the R1 door vs. the L1 door? The way the upper deck is set up, and because of the location of the galley and crew rest facilities, it isn’t possible to board through the left side.. Here...climb up with me.. #DreamLifter #B747 #QueenIfTheSkies
