Thread: More on Chinese Military Futures

1. The Spider Dragon’s military build-up continues apace thanks to a favorable trade balance with the US and stolen Western technology. Let’s take a look.

<quote>
2. Two decades of modernization of forces by the People's Liberation Army, the Communist Party of China-led army, "has already resulted in a force capable of contesting U.S. operations in the region, presenting challenges ….
2A. … to the U.S. military’s longstanding assumption of enjoying ground, air, maritime, and information dominance in a conflict in the post-Cold War era."
3. Chinese supreme leader Xi Jinping "significantly accelerated China’s military modernization goals in late 2017, requiring the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to become a fully ‘modern' military by 2035 and a ‘world-class' military by mid-century."
4. The Chinese strategy appears designed to contest the U.S. military by developing high-technology weapons, such as maneuvering missiles capable of targeting ships at sea, space weaponry, cyber warfare tools, and other advanced arms.
5. Another key development was China's recent creation of the Strategic Support Force, a military service-level branch that combines intelligence, information, cyber, space, and electronic warfare groups in one place.

6. That last bit is particularly important, as a key element of modern warfare involving the use of long-range missiles involves integrating intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and electronic warfare information for targeting of adversary platforms.
7. This capability in particular is a tell on how rapidly the Chinese PLA and PLA-N are improving in recent years.
8. And then there is the growing threat of Chinese hypersonic weapons. According to one panel of experts, China is leading the world in hypersonic technology development because the Chinese have established clear priorities for their industrial base.
9. This is unlike the US which has been focusing on counter-terrorism type wars over the past 18+ years, allowing both the Chinese are Russians to focus on air and missile technologies to exploit US vulnerabilities. Here is one key aspect of the hypersonic weapons threat:
10. <quote>

Hypersonic weapons pose warning and assessment challenges unlike any other systems, Austin Long, a nuclear policy adviser to the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said.
11. Describing the warning challenge, he said satellites could detect the weapon in its boost phase but, because its trajectory differs from a ballistic missile and its speed is so much greater than a cruise missile, “you won’t see it” with existing radar until it is too late.
12. <unquote>

Note: Hypersonic glide weapons travel at Mach 5 (3836 miles per hour)!

13. If hypersonic glide weapons aren’t futuristic enough for you, then how about Chinese advances in magnetized plasma artillery? Here’s what it’s all about from the abstract of a Chinese patent!

<quote>
14. A magnetic field is arranged in an artillery body pipe, the direction of the magnetic field points to an artillery port along the direction of an axis of the artillery body pipe, the magnetic field strength is gradually reduced from an inner wall of the artillery body pipe …
14A. … to the axis of the artillery body pipe, and the gas in the artillery body pipe can be ionized into the plasma for forming a plasma sheath layer on the inner wall of the artillery body pipe under the action of the magnetic field while the artillery is launched.
15. The magnetized plasma sheath layer formed on the inner wall of the artillery body pipe of the magnetized plasma artillery has stress anisotropic characteristic and has thermal insulation function, and then, the radial force for the artillery body pipe is greatly reduced, ….
15A. … the driving force for the bullet is greatly improved, the heat resistance of the artillery body pipe is greatly improved and the service life is prolonged.

16. In simple terms: A magnetic field is created inside the artillery (or tank) barrel that ionizes gas when fired, turning it into plasma and ejecting a projectile at Mach 5 or higher speeds. And the Chinese are well on the way to testing the capability.

17. Now let’s see what the Chinese themselves are saying about their tech plans:

<quote>

China is stepping up its efforts to develop new weaponry ranging from guns to fighter jets to challenge US dominance, according to Chinese military officials.
18. China is also working to improve the engines of its fighter planes as it seeks to develop stealth aircraft that can compete with the best in the world.
19. [In February] the official state news agency Xinhua reported that the Academy of Military Science, the top research body for the Chinese military, was stepping up the pace of its research and development.

20. And it looks like multinational IT giant Google is only too eager to help the Chinese, too.

<quote>

Top defense officials on Thursday blasted Google for its work in China, saying that the company’s efforts are serving the interests of the U.S. adversary.
21. “The work that Google is doing in China is indirectly benefiting the Chinese military,” Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee in a hearing.
22. “We watch with great concern when industry partners work in China knowing there is that indirect benefit. And frankly, ‘indirect’ may not be a full characterization of the way it really is, it’s more of a direct benefit to the Chinese military.”

23. The WTO’s grand push to open up China to Western investment over the last 30+ years sure smells fishy to me! More like the Chinese selling us the rope by which we’ll be hung if they achieve their global domination intentions!
24. Speaking of which, how does the PLA/PLA-N fit into China’s grand schemes for world domination? Why part and parcel, of course. And the PLA/PLA-N is tightly controlled by Xi Xinping and the Chinese Communist Party in pursuit of Made in China 2025, ….
24A. … One Belt One Road, the Chinese Silk Road, and other strategic initiatives.

<quote>
25. For the PLA, serving the state is a secondary role, in contrast to the U.S. military and most western militaries that are apolitical, professional armed forces first and whose foremost mission is to protect the country.
26. China's Communist leaders, led by Party General Secretary Xi Jinping, have maintained a vise-like grip on the PLA as major reforms were undertaken to transform the PLA from a large ground-force oriented military to a high-tech army.
27. To maintain tight control, a new PLA Political Work Dept was created similar to the General Political Dept, which in the past funded influence operations involving gatherings that sought to co-opt former American generals & admirals into supporting Chinese security policies.
28. China's military buildup and other means of power projection are aimed at global expansion to secure Beijing's continuation of Communist Party rule.
29. For many years, U.S. intelligence analysts argued China harbored global ambitions, and not only sought to achieve regional hegemony.
30. "China specifically seeks to displace the United States in the Indo-Pacific region, expand the reaches of its state-driven economic model, and reorder the region in its favor as the preeminent power.”

31. Here we have it: Chinese military capabilities continue to increase across the board. The Chinese continue to invest in advanced technologies with military applications – and freely admit it in open forums. Companies like Google are complicit in helping the Chinese military.
32. And finally, the PLA and PLA-N remain under tight Chinese Communist Party control and fully aligned with and supporting CCP initiatives aimed at world domination. Thank God we have a president who recognizes the long-term threat and is doing something about it! ///The end.
Post Script: And stop buying stuff "Made in China"!
