[Thread] Or...why do we have to explain in 2019 why Congresspeople should NOT quote from Mein Kampf on the floor of the House (or ever)? Let's talk about this.

Time for some #Threaducation

Full clip here:

Alabama Republican Wingnut (and Congressman) @RepMoBrooks leveraged not only Mein Kampf but also the much repeated (and still idiotic) idea that the Nazis were socialists in an homage to @realDonaldTrump and an assault on the media/Dems. The Nazis were NOT socialists (ffs).
For some history on that false claim of National "socialism" see:

In any case, this CONGRESSMAN literally read Mein Kampf on the floor of Congress, quoting the concept of the "Big Lie" and associating it with fake news, Democrats (who are all clearly socialists), and the media.
Beyond the idiocy of seeing Hitler as a socialist, @RepMoBrooks can't even get the reading of Mein Kampf right. Let's talk about the Big Lie. (An easy online version of Mein Kampf can be found at Project Gutenberg if you want to follow along.) gutenberg.net.au/ebooks02/02006…
In fact, @repMobrooks gets it wrong in just about every way. First, in the section he is reading about big lies, Hitler is talking about...THE JEWS. He is accusing THEM of blaming GEN Ludendorff for losing WWI, part of the "Stab in the Back" myth that blames Jews for the loss.
Brooks ends his selection from Mein Kampf conveniently early. A few sentences later, Hitler goes on (below). These "expert liars" and "these people" are Jews. But wait...Hitler is even clearer. As he continues, the Jews are the "Masters of Lies") and the Big Lie.
So, @RepMoBrooks is LITERALLY reciting antisemitic propaganda directly from Hitler on the floor of the House of Representatives. He is, therefore, making the SAME argument that Hitler made (i.e. that Jews, socialists, democrats are behind the media in order to destroy countries)
Also, this conflation of Jews and socialists, etc is an age-old antisemitic trope, as I explain here:

In fact, the term "big lie" is only used twice in Mein Kampf...and it's in THIS section about Jews. Basically, @RepMoBrooks just argued that the Republicans are the Nazis/Germans and Democrats are the Jews. Oops. Even the neo-Nazis got this.
But don't take my word for it. Let's go to the Nazis themselves to talk about the big lie and the Jews.

Here is a cover from the odious and deeply antisemitic "Der Stürmer" speaking of the "Lying Center" (referring to the Jews depicted grotesquely below).
This gem comes from "The Poisonous Mushroom," a Nazi children's book.

Caption reads: “People are always saying that we Jews cheat other people, that we lie and deceive. Not a word of it is true. We Jews are the most decent people in the world."
@RepMoBrooks' conflation of "liberals and socialism" with "fake news" is irresponsibly close to the idea that Jews control the news. This idea is not dead, as evidenced by the image from the Daily Stormer (L) and others below. It's a dog whistle for the far right.
Worth mentioning also that Holocaust Deniers call the #Holocaust a "Big Lie" as well. Also, the neo-Nazis understand Mein Kampf better than Brooks, recognizing the statement he read as being directed against JEWS.
We MIGHT chalk this up to colossal ignorance and tone-deafness on the part of @RepMoBrooks. But, then again, in 2017 he described criticism of then-Senator Jeff Sessions as part of a "war against whites." More dog whistles.
One can criticize the other party and their policies, but the continued repetition of Nazi and white supremacist talking points by the GOP is a real-world problem born of both ignorance and probably intention.
Also, wonder if this recital of Mein Kampf and the title of @DineshDSouza's book are coincidences?
(p.s.- For Gordon Fraser at the @chronicle and other academics who think academic engagement on Twitter is a waste of time, maybe read this.)

Timing is a mofo.
