This article says that in MD they try to address the opaqueness of barcode voting by comparing barcode totals against a hand count of the text on the paper printouts (which some misleadingly call “paper ballots”). But this does not make barcodes verifiable by the VOTERS. 1/
And the whole point of my Salon piece (originally published by @whowhatwhy)—which the author tried to minimize by calling me an activist blogger”—is that the text itself can be changed AFTER the ballot is cast. 2/
Indeed, in AutoCast, the ballot isn’t marked at all until after the voter selects “cast ballot”. 3/
Meanwhile, the article you posted identifies not one legitimate reason to put these barcodes on the printouts. 4/
Oh, and the article mocks without substantive explanation the notion that machines might be maliciously programmed or hacked to add fake votes to the paper ballots after they are cast. 5/
The question the article doesn’t answer is why we should introduce this possibility at all when doing so defeats the whole point of using paper ballots, which is to confirm that electronic fraud did not occur. 6/
In the end, this does not appear to me to be a serious piece. 7/
The article suggests that having election insiders compare potentially fraudulent barcodes to potentially fraudulent machine-marked text can detect fraud. That strikes me as ridiculous, but I will contact the author of the article (with whom I’m acquainted) to discuss. TY. 8/
