Over 13,500 iSCSI storage clusters left exposed online without a password

Exposed systems include enterprise-grade storage disk arrays to itsy bitsy NAS devices.

This is a huge attack vector. It can be used by ransomware gangs to plant malware-laced files on corporate networks, inject backdoors inside backup archives, or steal corporate files from unprotected systems.

And all of this takes two steps:

1) Identify systems on Shodan
2) Use the iSCSI Initiator to connect to a remote iSCSI cluster and add it to your system
You don't know how that works?

No problem. There are countless of tutorials available. Here's one on YouTube:
The researcher who found this new security vector (@arealshadow) found some clusters belonging to many private corps

In just 5 minutes, idiot me found iSCSI clusters belonging to a YMCA branch, a Russian government agency, and multiple universities and research institutes
Also a fun fact. Many iSCSI clusters were from NAS systems that had a password for the web interface, but the iSCSI port was left with authentication set to "none," meaning you could still connect to it regardless
God, if I'm the BitPaymer/Ryuk/LockerGoga/SamSam/GandCrab/Matrix crew, I know what I'm doing in the next few days
