Helloooo conservatives! I know you dig balanced and efficient free markets, and free market innovation. Fairness matters to you, too - everyone deserves a fair shot, right? But can we talk about fossil fuels for a sec? 1/10
These fuels have created wealth and driven job creation and etc and etc. Agree! But when a citizen or company uses them, whether they are in 🇨🇦, or 🇺🇸, or 🇨🇳, or wherever, that person or company asks others to accept real - and measurable - costs of their activities. 2/10
These costs don’t go away, they just become someone else’s problem. That’s not a smooth running market, and it isn’t fair, either. In other words, the price you pay for fuel (or, if you live in some parts of 🇨🇦, what you paid last week) doesn’t reflect its actual costs. 3/10
Carbon pricing works to begin to fix this. It asks all users of fossil fuels to accept, and pay for, the costs of using the product imposes on others. Now, there are a bunch of things that need to happen along with it. 4/10
Governments need to make sure that low income people get a break. Poor people struggle just to get by, and so they need to be protected. You need to consider competitiveness issues carefully. 5/10
But carbon pricing fixes a market that has been out of whack for a very long time. It starts modestly, and steadily increases, giving people time to adjust to it as it works in the background to level the playing field. 6/10
Eventually, that marvelous free market innovation starts to kick in! Companies know that people don’t like “pain at the pump” so they start offering relief in the form of non-polluting products that work maybe a little differently but just as well and maybe even better! 7/10
But WITHOUT that price signal, that nudge just doesn’t happen. Or, more accurately, it doesn’t happen HERE. Others grab the opportunity. Because the evidence is clear that we either address this now, when it’s still do-able, or later, when it’s REALLY expensive. 8/10
And if we ARE going to address it now, why not use a transparent, proven market-driven approach that starts to tackle the problem, fairly, across the whole economy? Why would you wait for others to grab the opportunities? That‘s gotta chafe at your entrepreneurial spirit. 9/10
Tell me. Because I see many conservatives calling climate change a “left wing” issue. (Were the people fleeing the Fort Mac 🔥 left wingers?!) Some of you say carbon pricing “kills jobs” without offering ANY evidence. So what’s your solution? What would work better? 10/10
