If you want to brush up on the @Kobuk440 before @QuinceMountain starts it with our dogs tomorrow (!), here’s a thread about my experience in it last year. I had a blast and I can’t wait to follow the team’s next adventure.
The race crosses sea ice, river, tundra, and some gently-sloping foothills as it passes between arctic villages. The terrain is gentle, but challenges can come from storms, heat, and long distances between checkpoints—and this year, extensive overflow. A phone map of Alaska showing Kotzebue as 2/3 of the way up the western coast. The next image is a map of the race, which makes a narrow loop into the interior that reverses direction on alternate years.
This will be @QuinceMountain’s longest race yet and he’s running it as an Iditarod qualifier. He’s planning on running conservatively—but he’ll have to make a few strategic pushes to avoid getting stuck in the heat of the day.
Meanwhile, I’ll be watching the free tracker at kobuk440.com and hanging out with our wonderful host family, and especially 12-year-old Briar. Briar helped me with the dogs last year, then ran a youth race herself, and has since been volunteering for the Kobuk.
We’ve stayed in touch all year and have big plans: once the teams are safely on the trail, we’re gonna draw and paint some awesome signs to welcome them home. Stay tuned.
Also, we’ve been talking with local groups to see about offering a fundraiser like the #Igivearod for causes in villages along the trail, who do so much for the mushers and the race. We’ll be making an announcement soon about how you can get involved! #KoBucks440
