/ Since it's Dr. Maya Angelou's birthday. I'm going to tell y'all a quick story of the time my mother sold a pair of earrings to Dr. Angelou.
/ First let me say, Dr. Maya Angelou was devestated after #MartinLutherKing was assasinated. He was murdered on her birthday, and for years after, she refused to celebrate her birthday. oprah.com/own-master-cla…
/ I wanted to honor Dr. Angelou today, because she quite literally brought joy to my mother on the last day of my mom's life, and that is why I would like to celebrate Dr. Angelou.
/My mother was a single mother, who in the last years of her life started her own jewelry business, called 'Elements'. Each of one of her jewelry line collections was named after us, her three children: Maya, Matisse, and Mondrian. (my brothers and I now and back then)
/ On a day when she wasn't feeling very well (she had been going through chemo and radiation and had just gone through a double mastectomy) she was at a crafts fair selling her jewelry when Dr. Angelou walked up to her booth. (this was my mom, she made the shirt too)
/ Dr. Angelou walked up to my mom's booth and said 'This is very lovely, is this handmade?' My mom explained that all of it was handmade by herself. She noticed that one of the collections was named Maya. She asked with a smile 'Was this named after me?" (with no ego, BTW)
/ My mom said 'No. It's named after my daughter, who I named after you.' Dr. Angelou was apparently really touched & bought some earrings from my mother. About a month later, my mom was in hospice. We were watching TV and Dr. Angelou was on the screen WITH MY MOM'S EARRINGS ON!
/ My mom who was mostly bedridden at this point, was on the couch next to me, jumped up! I jumped up and we both shouted 'OH MY GOD!!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!' It was exactly the type of joy we needed at that moment. The next day, my mother passed away.
/ I never got to tell Dr. Maya Angelou how much that meant to me, to my mother, who needed a win. I did write Guy, her son a letter, but I wish I could have told her. Happy Birthday to phenomenal woman Dr. Maya Angelou, and thank you. ❤️
