This is exactly what happened to me at #Google. Before my 60 days was over in Thanks Giving week 2018, I spoke to a couple of high ranking people there, who claimed to care about diversity/inclusion. They didn’t do anything & watched me being disposed of. wired.com/story/microsof…
I wouldn’t be surprised if #Google would be pooh poohing #Microsoft today, instead of looking in the mirror. That’s what they did when @susanthesquark’s story about Uber was published. Pooh poohed Uber, as if they had never paid $135M to sexual harassers.
“More common complaints in the online discussion centered on feeling stymied in promotion, trying to balance assertiveness with pressure to appear nice, and the bias and disparate treatment that allegedly comes with being labeled a “diversity hire.”
I was lowballed and hired at a level much lower than what I should have. I was more senior, educated, and experienced than most people around me, and yet was expected to shut up and have no opinion ever, not point to design issues/flaws!
They treated me as if I was a “diversity hire”, and I should have been happy that I had a job there. While I repeatedly questioned my manager about my leveling/promotion, he would tell me that there was no requirement for me to get to the next level! L4 had become the new L5!
I was right to feel deja vu; being treated like a diversity hire in spite of all my credentials and qualifications! Because before Google and at #Intel, I was hired to “fix their diversity issues” and what I experienced at Google was a carbon copy of what had unfolded at Intel!
These companies seem to hire women and minorities only because of legal obligations. They discriminate against them in hiring/leveling/pay/rating/promoting, and use them to temporarily fix their diversity stats, black list and dispose of them when they stand up and complain.
At Google they don’t explicitly call you a “bitch”. Instead, they add an insidious signal to your performance record, something about “communication skills”. That is code for “bitch”. With that, you’ll find yourself rejected by any other manager, as soon as they check your perf.
I applied for 70 internal jobs, and talked to ~20 managers, and didn’t get a single yes. The last manager I talked to, before ending the meeting said to me “but you have this thing in your perf”. I asked what is it? He said “communication style”. As if I was infected with plague!
Google HR once told me my prediction about what was going to happen—being black listed, spending 60 days applying for jobs and being rejected, humiliated, eventually forced to leave—was a “conspiracy theory”! It’s not a theory! This is practiced by tech HR everywhere! Time’s Up!
I escalated all the way up to Google’s VP of People Ops, @EileenTNaughton and she just passed me down again to the same HR team to “investigate”. I escalated to the VP of my org Jen Fitzpatrick; she didn’t even bother to respond.
That’s how they finish off and discard their employees, like disposable tokens!
