In creating the planeshifter and survivalist, the biggest question we had to answer was, "How do you bring nature-focused classes to a science fiction game?"

In the traditional sense, nature plays a relatively small part in sci-fi. There's a heavier focus on tech. #ttrpg #DnD5e
We've been calling the upcoming supplement 'the nature book' because of the two classes that are its capstones. But how does that work in space? What's a druid to do? Not much flora and fauna to see if you're not on a life-sustaining planet.

So we started by redefining 'nature'.
The void is part of the natural world, and so are any creatures that inhabit it. Asteroids, moons, celestial bodies - all these constitute nature, even if they're inorganic! Add in spaceship and station greenhouses and weird beasties and plants and you've got plenty to go on!
With that in mind, we developed the planeshifter first. We wanted the capstone of their abilities to be the shape-shifting, but with the resilience to exist in the void. Spirit Shape creates the ephemeral form of the creature and encases the shifter, rather than an actual change.
In keeping with the timelessness of classic #dnd #druids, we made planeshifters resonate with the world around them, but in this case, that means the void and extraplanar spaces. If you want a more traditionally nature-focused shifter, try one attuned to the material!
The Bond of Flora gives you the ability to grow plants in the void. And then you can use the #dnd circles to further populate options for material bonds.

Though more distantly related to its original class than the adept, the shifter should still feel like a druid.
The survivalist is another story altogether. We wrestled with the best way to bring the ranger to space for a long time! How do you make Favored Terrain and enemies worthwhile in the vastness of the galaxy? How do you make wilderness utility work?
Ultimately we chose to focus on two main aspects of the ranger: their ability to adapt and survive, and their all-around versatility.

The survivalist not only chooses a region to focus on, but also chooses an archetype that dictates their modus operandi in a fight.
We also made the choice to make Survivalists constitution casters. Their strength of body works toward their spells as well as their health. They're supposed to endure.

In a game full of guns, the Survivalist is the only class that can dual wield guns (depending on archetype).
In short, they're a jack-of-all-trades, both on and off the battlefield, and with their ability to attune to an environment (including the void), we think we've maintained enough of the original #dnd ranger to give players a similar feel in S&S.
