#warren/#buttigieg 2020. Tell me why I'm wrong.
I was really hoping to elect a person of color, and I still have some interest in Harris. But she's getting too much heat for her prosecutor background. Besides Warren has the most policies that align with my view of America, AND she knows how to make those goals achievable!
And Buttigieg... I'm still learning about his ability to govern, but I'm continually impressed by how worldly and hella SMART he is. and he's obviously had some inside experience of oppression as a gay man from middle America.
The two maybe flaws about #Buttigieg I've seen discussed are how references to his Christian faith in campaign speeches and his outreach to Middle Americans, a group that the media already seems to count more as "real voters" than us coastal elites.
But my impression, and I could be wrong, is that #buttigieg isn't counting middle Americans ABOVE coastal liberals... But that they shouldn't be completely ignored. And much as I'm frustrated with red state voters' history of voting against their own (and everyone's) interests,
Maybe middle Americans aren't as unreachable as my disdain for their voting record and rhetoric leads me to believe. Fox News etc radicalized them a certain way; if we can find a way to break thru the mental barrier, maybe they can be de-radicalized. (Pete's white maleness helps)
As for #buttigieg 's infrequent references to Christianity in his campaign rhetoric... Again, I have a personal disdain for religion that's influencing my reaction. I have met and witnessed many, many so - called "Christians" who were terrible people using their faith as a shield
( #exvangelicals like @C_Stroop have many examples to share if you need proof of this!)
But maybe, just maybe, #buttigieg is one of those mythical unicorns we hear about but rarely actually meet: a Christian that tries to be Christlike. A Christian that doesn't cherry pick the parts of their religious text that agrees with beliefs and opinions they already hold,
Instead, a Christian that alters their life and their attitudes to be more like the idealized version of themselves that they think their God would want them to be. Christians that live by example rather than reprimand. Idk, we'll see 🤷‍♀️
Anyway, those are some thoughts I've had so far regarding the 2020 dem primaries. Regardless of whoever wins, I'll be voting for them, bc a third party vote is a vote for trump, and I will NOT have any hand in subjecting this country to another four years of that nightmare.
I'm certainly not married to #warren/#buttigieg, and if something terrible comes out about either or both, I'll alter my opinions on them accordingly. But so far I'm hella impressed with both, and I'm hopeful that others are, too. /fin
