This piece is heartbreaking and altogether too close to home. Beautiful, maddening writing, though, by @AdamHSays. Must read.

Thea Hunter was on the cutting edge of the field of history—and then the realities of academia took hold. theatlantic.com/education/arch…
@AdamHSays This piece resonates like an Edith Wharton novel. The penury and stress of the female and minority adjunct professor and the losses of their scholarship is of another time and yet uniquely our own.
A professorship is covered. But an adjunct professorship is endless, relentless work where women professors love their students and work hard for them while getting a pittance.
There are no protections for adjuncts. And department chairs often feel they can abuse them with both terrible assignments and over-booked classes.
When I was teaching writing, my then- department chair was outright abusive to me, penalizing me for being in a wheelchair. She would assign me to classrooms difficult to access.
If I complained, she would tell me if I was too disabled to work, I should quit.
After there was a fire, she sent a memo to students saying if there was ever a fire to leave me there, exit and inform the fire fighters. (We were on the 14th floor.)

The students told me they would never do that. "We'll carry you down like on 9/11.'
