Last week, I had a couple of long drives. Since I had a lot of time to kill, I decided to listen to some publishing talks/roundtables with university press editors. What I found may be useful for grads, junior faculty, or anyone else looking to publish a first book. 1/
Here’s a roundtable with the literary agent Jill Kneerim (who represents a lot of academics), Gita Manaktala (Editorial Director @mitpress), and @_sen_sharmila (Editorial Director @Harvard_Press).
Here’s another talk, this one by Ken Wissoker (Editorial Director @DukePress).
These are the ones I found most useful. If you have any other suggestions, please reply with them. Publishing a first book is hard enough. Hopefully this will go some way toward easing people’s anxieties and answering some important questions about the publication process. /End

@Post_45 It’s probably the most personal thing I’ve ever written. But my experience isn’t unique.
If you’re an academic who is at all curious about writing for websites and magazines, please read it and be in touch.
@Post_45 As anyone who does this kind of work knows all too well, it’s important to have supportive friends and colleagues. They are my most important public.
But it’s also important to admire from afar. To look up to academics who are great writers. To read and share their work.
