In light of #ReconstructionPBS and #FindingYourRoots I feel compelled to share this picture..though I'm sure my minuscule followers & non fame no one will care but I want to share the teeny gap between slavery and now.. so here goes *thread
This is my GREAT GREAT grandfather Sylvester Dawson of Yatesville, GA. As I was raised by my grandfather and him by his ..this man..I heard many stories Sylvester growing up ..whom I didnt even know his real name as he was known as Zeke my whole life
It says granddaddy on the picture bc that is my deceased grandfathers writing and thats what he called him and how close they were. Sylvester was born. Zeke was born in 1857 so he was 8 years old at emancipation and thereby came of age during #Reconstruction
He had a hard life despite #Reconstruction according to my grandfather... I havent been able to find much about him in my 10 years of genealogical research .. some tax property records I THINK may be him ..but my expertise doesnt go that far
Im just a poor teacher (whose school closing down so soon to be unemployed teacher) so I have been unable to afford such but I have a special place in my heard for this man
also thats my great great uncle Arthur in the picture with him
My point in all this though I hate to tell my age, its I'm mid 30's, born in the 80's and yet grew up knowing and learning about my ancestor..WHO.WAS.A.SLAVE!!!
so the fact that people dismiss slavery as some olden thing, insignificant now, etc etc is baffling to me. Also considering the hidden and dismissive history of #Reconstruction as so greatly outlined on #ReconstructionPBS is just... i have no words..
These people are alive and well, with people with remember them or have been told of them.. It was 3 years ago but my grandfather just died in 2016 yet he knew this man... an enslaved
I knew him through my grandfathers stories... It is not just the past to be dismissed
And thats all I really want to say right now... so many thoughts but these were the urgent ones on my mind I wanted to share
