"I'm shaking." If you're not in any way at risk of harm, what the heck kind of ally are you trying to be with this? Take decisive action to ensure the rhetoric is curbed, make sure Rep. Ilhan has security, and choose to build a world where this doesn't happen again.
I'm over the white "allies" who come to us seeking reassurance and strength when they hold money, networks, and other resources that could mean a shift in *action* and not just "wow, I'm in tears, this is so hard for me to witness this happening to you."
The helplessness in allies' responses to anti-refugee, anti-Black, anti-Muslim, anti-woman hate might seem comforting to some, but as someone who has politician family members who were assassinated in 1975, I don't care for it. Do something other than center your feelings.
There are many people who think we're in the midst of a "white genocide." I don't care what they think. I care about what they can do. Can we be done being shocked at their choices and make some decisions to ensure they don't have the ability to continue to carry out violence?
Note the word "continue." Because white men have chosen to plot and/or attempt to carry out violence against multiple Black Muslim spaces: refugee spaces, cities like #Islamberg, apartment buildings, mosques. It's been happening. Targeting Rep. Ilhan isn't some aberration.
Violence and death are familiar visitors to those who organize community into resistance against oppressors. Those of us who grew up with such legacies do not need the fragility of allies. Do you need me to comfort you in this "difficult time"? Or are you going to act with me?
The media in this country covers Muslims in a specific way because it generates clicks and ad revenue for them. Let's stop pretending Islamophobia hasn't made some people very, very wealthy. Killing, surveilling, and demonizing certain groups of people makes people money. Period.
Me personally, I don't need to know your attitude toward racism. What are you actually doing? "If a white man wants to lynch me, that's his problem. If he's got the power to lynch me, that's my problem. Racism is not a question of attitude; it's a question of power." - Kwame Ture
Pet peeve: aspirational allyship statements like "we have your back" or "we won't let hate win."

What's the actual plan? Cuz if you have a weak analysis of the power and systems that are operating, I don't need to hear lofty statements that have no basis in a specific strategy.
There is a difference between statements that incite to violence and statements that are "free speech." Period. Genocides happen because bank accounts aren't frozen, leaders aren't ostracized, and media outlets are given free reign to publish whatever they want. Recognize that.
The "well, let me play devil's advocate..." and treating discussions around community safety in the face of structural violence as an intellectual prompt to sit and debate is devilish. Period. Fighting against genocides, assassinations, and vigilante violence is well-documented.
There are multiple voices on Twitter of people whose family members, community leaders, etc. were murdered by police, military, vigilantes, etc. Listen to them. Recognize "the resistance" isn't sexy and isn't going to happen without practical, deep-seated, long term strategy.
And for God's sake, stop asking me to hold emotional space for the feelings of allies witnessing Islamophobia. I mention silk ring theory a lot, but seriously, please go dump that stuff out elsewhere and not toward people more directly affected than you. medium.com/@namira.islam/…
